Accommodation in Oldenswort
If you are looking for a hotel in Oldenswort, the themes of your trip can help you find your bearings: architectural history, archaeological traces, or landscapes and cycling routes each offer a different focus.
Hoyerswort Manor House and St. Pankratius Church
Hoyerswort Manor House lies south of Oldenswort and is considered the only manor house in the Eiderstedt region. The manor house has a sculpture park. Its location and distinctive features give it a unique place in regional architectural history.
St. Pankratius Church was built in the mid-13th century on an artificial mound as a Romanesque hall church with two small transepts. Extensions to the east choir and west tower were added in the 15th century. The building phases show that the church was enlarged over several centuries.
The furnishings include Gothic ceiling paintings and richly decorated Ivers choir stalls dating from 1589. The triumphal cross ensemble was created by Lütje Möller in 1491. Repairs currently limit views of some of the furnishings.
Local History and Archaeological Traces
The local history collection displays archaeological finds from the Tofting dwelling mound. Excavations uncovered three farmsteads there, which were continuously raised between the 2nd and 5th centuries. The Tofting dwelling mound is now uninhabited and protected as an archaeological cultural monument. The collection and the history of the excavations complement each other, connecting individual finds with the long development of the farmsteads.
A former house at Dorfstraße 31 is also part of the architectural history: it was built in 1610 in the Dutch Renaissance style. Together with St. Pankratius Church, it offers a glimpse of different periods in local architecture.
The cultural connections to the area also reach into social and literary history. Ferdinand Tönnies was born near Oldenswort. In 1887, he published Community and Society, the first work in the German language explicitly identified as a work of sociology. From 1897, the writer Thusnelda Kühl worked as a teacher in Oldenswort and spent what she herself described as the happiest and most productive period of her life there. Their lives highlight different things: Tönnies is associated above all with a work of sociology, while Kühl is associated with the connection between literary work and teaching.
