Olderup combines village history with an agricultural landscape shaped by hedgerows. The nearly 1,000-year-old fieldstone church, traditional farmstead architecture and two cycling routes give you practical starting points for planning a stay. Historical themes range from Bronze Age burial mounds to a former schoolhouse; when cycling, you can choose between routes of 23.1 and 49 kilometres.

Church and Historic Farmstead Architecture

Bronze Age burial mounds lie in the fields south of Olderup. The fieldstone church is nearly 1,000 years old and was rebuilt in its simple form after a fire in 1938. These details place the village’s history in context, but tell different stories: the burial mounds date from the Bronze Age, while the church was rebuilt after the fire.

Traditional farmstead architecture in Olderup includes the Schoosterhus and the Kösterhus. The Kösterhus dates from 1712 and served as the village school until 1804. This building therefore offers insight not only into the area’s architectural history, but also into an earlier use within the village.

Hedgerows and Rural Character

The local landscape is structured by hedgerows: earth banks planted with native shrubs. Together with the documented agricultural character, they shape Olderup’s rural setting. This makes landscape features another focus for planning your trip, alongside the history of the buildings and the village.

Cycling Routes Around Olderup

A 49-kilometre circular cycling route connects the churches of Schwesing, Viöl, Olderup, Hattstedt, Schobüll and Husum. The section between Viöl and Olderup crosses the Arlaubrücke bridge and includes a scenic viewpoint. Check route conditions before setting out.

The 23.1-kilometre Olderup–Hattstedt–Olderup family cycling route passes the historic Haubarg Arlewatthof. Its length offers a concrete comparison with the 49-kilometre circular route; the family cycling route and the church circuit also differ in their stated destinations. The distances can help you assess the routes for your own plans, but they do not imply any particular walking or cycling time.
