Grothusenkoog: North Sea Coast, Dike and Horse Riding
Accommodation in Grothusenkoog
Grothusenkoog combines its coastal setting with opportunities for horse riding and cycling. These highlights are easy to distinguish when planning your trip.
Coast and dike
Grothusenkoog is located directly on the North Sea coast and the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Its position on the dike offers views towards St. Peter-Ording, Vollerwiek and the Eider Barrage. The dike is therefore a clear local landmark, while the three directions of view identify the coastal area more specifically.
Icelandic horses and riding opportunities
Eichenhof in Grothusenkoog is home to an Icelandic horse farm, welcomes guest horses and offers riding trails. It also hosts an annual qualifying tournament for the Icelandic Horse World Championships. If you would like to plan your trip around this tournament, check the event dates in advance.
There are also riding opportunities in neighbouring St. Peter-Ording, including riding on the beach. The required permit is needed for this. The distinction is useful for planning: in Grothusenkoog, the focus is on the Icelandic horse farm, guest horses and riding trails; in St. Peter-Ording, beach riding is an additional option. If this particular option interests you, factor the permit into your plans.
Cycling excursions along the dike and across Eiderstedt
For longer cycling excursions, you can ride along the dike with views of the North Sea or explore the green landscape of the Eiderstedt peninsula. This lets you choose your focus based on the scenery: coastal views along the dike or Eiderstedt’s green landscape. Both options are part of cycling in Grothusenkoog, but differ in whether the coast or the peninsula’s landscape takes centre stage.
North Frisia as the wider regional setting
North Frisia provides the broader regional setting. The region has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, distinctive landscape formations within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and part of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. These features describe North Frisia as a broader destination; Grothusenkoog’s own points of interest are the North Sea coast, the dike and opportunities for horse riding and cycling. The wider North Frisia region also offers nature and excursions with a range of focuses. The Schlüttsiel Information Centre has a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day; in suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. Visitors can observe a wealth of birdlife at Hauke-Haien-Koog. Excursion boats depart from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as the seal banks; check the timetable before your trip. Two regional cycling routes differ in length: the Beltringharder Route starts in Lüttmoorsiel and is 27 kilometres long; the Stollberg-Koog Tour starts at the Amsinck-Haus in Reußenköge and covers 35 kilometres.
