Viöl: History, Farmers’ Market and Viöler Land
Accommodation in Viöl
Viöl combines a long local history with its farmers’ market and leisure activities in town. In the Viöler Land, walks, cycling tours and places to visit round out the picture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Viöl, you can plan your stay around whether you’d like to focus on historical sites, the annual market or the regional countryside.
St. Christopher and Viöl’s History
The more than 800-year-old St. Christopher’s Church stands in the centre of Viöl and is surrounded by its churchyard. It was an early focal point of the historic village. Viöl was first recorded in 1275 under the Danish name “Fjolde,” translated as “High Field.” The names of the church’s pastors and deacons have been recorded continuously since 1389.
The church’s works of art include its granite baptismal font from the 13th century, its oldest work of art, and a late Gothic pulpit from the 16th century. Together, they offer a glimpse into different periods. The church is dedicated to Saint Christopher. The dedication may be linked to a ford across the Arlau Valley: the valley was passable at the site of the church.
Farmers’ Market and Leisure Activities in Town
Viöl’s farmers’ market has been held every year on Ascension Day since 1995. It takes place in the newly redesigned village centre and at the festival grounds. The market attracts around 20,000 visitors; the number may vary from year to year. If you’d like to include a visit to the market in your trip, check the date for the relevant year.
Viöl also has a seasonal swimming pool on Kirchenweg. Opening hours are posted at the pool; plan your visit around the times listed there. A skate park has also been built in Viöl. If you’re planning to visit, check its current condition beforehand.
The Viöler Land: Routes and Places to Visit
The Viöler Land lies between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in Schleswig-Holstein. Nature walks and cycling tours pass through green geest landscapes, fields and the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowlands; an extensive network of paths is available. These landscapes offer a different focus from the local history and farmers’ market. In the Viöler Land, you can also discover regional products and make use of excursion tips.
Regional destinations range from the national park and the Halligen to museums and the Multimar Wattforum in Tönning. Excursions to the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site can include the Halligen, islands and seal banks, which can be reached by ferry. Check ferry connections before travelling. This makes it easy to plan your stay around the destinations you’d like to visit in the region.
