Hooge: Wadden Sea, Nature and Hallig Stories
Accommodation in Hooge
Hooge offers nature and culture in a variety of formats: the National Park House features an exhibition and a mudflat workshop; other attractions include mudflat hikes, bathing spots, the ghost trail and the Hallig church. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between these offerings by the kind of experience they provide: you’ll encounter natural history topics at the house and on the mudflats, while stories and guided tours add a cultural perspective.
The Wadden Sea at the National Park House
The Hooge National Park House features a national park exhibition about the diversity of life in the Wadden Sea. Its topics also include mudflat aquariums and the Halligen in a changing climate. The same building is home to the mudflat workshop, where children and adults can explore nature and discover it through play. The exhibition and workshop each have a different focus: the exhibition covers the natural and Hallig-related topics mentioned above, while the workshop offers the chance to explore hands-on and through play.
Regional context
Hooge has been part of the development zone of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and Halligen Biosphere Reserve since the end of 2004. This zone includes five large, inhabited Halligen: Hooge, Gröde, Langeneß, Nordstrandischmoor and Oland. This status places Hooge in a regional context that includes the island itself and the four other Halligen named above.
Mudflat hikes and bathing spots
The National Park House offers mudflat hikes to the Hallig of Norderoog and to Japsand. Alongside the topics covered at the house, these provide two specific destinations for a hike across the mudflats. An exhibition and a mudflat hike are different ways to engage with the Wadden Sea: the house focuses on the topics mentioned, while the hike takes you to the two destinations listed.
Hallig Hooge also has seven unsupervised bathing spots. Most are also equipped with beach chairs and mobile toilet trailers; these facilities may vary by season. Bathing spots and mudflat hikes therefore offer different ways to enjoy outdoor activities, and you should bear in mind that the availability of beach chairs and mobile toilet trailers changes seasonally.
Stories and the Hallig church
The Hooge Ghost Trail presents nine selected stories, which Sylvia Kleudgen tells evocatively at the respective locations on the Hallig. They can be downloaded as free audio plays via QR code. Guided tours of St. John's Hallig Church can be arranged by prior agreement. The cultural offerings therefore differ in format and planning: the Ghost Trail focuses on stories and audio plays, while a church tour must be arranged in advance.
Getting to Hallig Hooge
Hallig Hooge can be reached from the ports of Nordstrand/Strucklahnungshörn and Schlüttsiel. You can consider both ports as possible starting points for your journey and check which connection suits your travel date. This allows you to plan your journey separately from choosing what to do on Hooge.
Different priorities for your stay
When choosing between the different offerings, both the kind of experience and practical considerations matter: the exhibition and mudflat workshop are located at the National Park House, while mudflat hikes lead to Norderoog and Japsand. Facilities at the bathing spots may vary by season, while church tours need to be arranged in advance. The Ghost Trail’s free audio plays offer a different format from a pre-arranged guided tour.
