Canals and Activities on the Water

Friedrichstadt’s canals connect the waterways between the Eider and Treene rivers, making it possible to explore the town from the water. Electric boat trips travel through the canals and along the Treene. Canoe tours can start in Friedrichstadt and follow the Treene towards Schwabstedt. Stand-up paddleboarding is possible on the canals as well as on the nearby Eider and Treene. Fishing is also one of the activities in Friedrichstadt.

Cycling Through the Town and Surroundings

There are well-maintained cycling routes around Friedrichstadt for short outings and multi-day tours. The nearby Eider-Treene-Sorge river region and the Eiderstedt peninsula can be reached from Friedrichstadt by boat, bicycle or on foot. If you prefer to plan shorter routes, there are options for those as well as for multi-day tours. History and Religious Diversity

The Alte Münze Museum is housed in a richly decorated Renaissance building. The exhibition focuses on the founding of Friedrichstadt, its religious diversity and everyday life. Both the town’s origins and the lives of its residents are therefore at the heart of the exhibition.

Friedrichstadt has places of worship representing five denominations. The Remonstrant Church is the only church of the Protestant Remonstrants outside the Netherlands. House marks can also be found on building façades: reliefs featuring motifs associated with the profession or character of former residents. They draw attention to details that can be discovered alongside the larger architectural forms.

Townscape and Landscape

Friedrichstadt is known for its stepped-gable architecture and canals, as well as its small independent shops and workshops, cafés and restaurants. The flat meadows around the town are shaped by the Eider, Treene and Sorge rivers. Urban architecture and the landscape of the surrounding river region thus offer distinct aspects of a stay. At the regional level, Nordfriesland has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum, among others.
