Husum combines a harbor, nature and culture. The North Sea extends into the town, and Husum is also connected to the Wadden Sea National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. This offers different ways to plan your stay: take in the harbor and the tides, follow a route toward SchobĂĽll, or make time for museums and guided tours of the town.

Harbor, Wadden Sea and Nature

At Husum Harbor, you can experience the surroundings at low or high tide. The Husum National Park House is right by the harbor. A route of around 8 km starts there and leads to the pier in the SchobĂĽll district. Along the way, the harbor, meadows and birdlife come together with unobstructed views of the North Sea across the dike-free landscape. You can experience the harbor as a place shaped by the changing tides or include a longer route with varied scenery in your stay.

In spring, more than four million crocuses transform Husum Castle Park into a spectacular violet display. This gives the town a seasonal natural highlight alongside its coastal attractions. Beyond Husum, you can watch birds year-round along the North Frisian coast and in the adjacent inland areas.

Boat trips from Husum include excursions to seal banks and crab-fishing trips. If you plan to take one, check the dates in advance. Food is also part of the harbor experience: you can enjoy crab rolls or Frisian cake there.

Museums, Architecture and Guided Tours

The Ostenfeld Farmhouse is Germany’s oldest open-air museum. It presents traditional rural everyday and working life through period interiors, tools and household items. The farmhouse also has a garden with boxwood-edged beds, herbs, ornamental plants and old apple trees. The exhibition combines insights into domestic and working life with the garden’s tangible details.

The Nordfriesland Museum Nissenhaus focuses on cultural developments and traditions along the North Sea coast. Husum’s museums also explore topics such as whaling and fishing, shipbuilding and navigation, the sunken settlement of Rungholt, and literary connections to Theodor Storm. The Theodor Storm Center combines an archive and museum in Storm’s last home in Husum.

Architecture and local history have several points of interest, too: Schloss vor Husum houses a museum with a rooftop gallery. St. Mary’s Church is considered one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most significant neoclassical works. Information panels explain each stop along the Husum Cultural Trail. Husum also offers guided tours year-round, including guided walks and night watchman tours. This lets you add guided explorations to your itinerary rather than focusing solely on museums or nature.
