Joldelund combines a historic focal point in the village centre with opportunities to experience the Geest on foot, by bike or on horseback. St. Dionysius, the 1771 Dutch windmill and the network of trails offer different points of interest during your stay. Joldelund has a holiday home area; the range of accommodation may change over time.

Village Church and Mill

In the village centre stands a fieldstone church that is approximately 800 years old. St. Dionysius was first documented in 1240; this early record should not be taken as a confirmed construction date. The church is considered an expression of North Frisian simplicity. The interior also offers specific historical details: the altarpiece was probably remodelled and repainted in 1601, and the ceiling beams in the chancel bear drawings. The approximate age, the first documented record and the probable alteration of the altarpiece thus refer to different points in time.

Another distinctive building is the Dutch windmill, built in 1771. It was constructed from components from Holland and is privately owned. Joldelund thus has both a fieldstone church and a mill with its own building history. As the mill is privately owned, it is best to check in advance if a visit is possible.

Routes and Landscape

The Kammbarg Route is an easy circular tour covering 25.613 kilometres. It starts in LĂĽtjenholm, passes through varied Geest landscapes and reaches Joldelund; the Dutch windmill is one of its features. This gives you a specific route framework for planning your tour, with a starting point and stated distance. Check the latest route details before setting out, as route information may change.

Leisure activities in Joldelund also include cycling on an extensive network of trails lined with hedgerows, walks in attractive surroundings and horse riding. In nearby Joldelunder Schweiz, a forest nature trail runs alongside the 30-metre-high Kammbarg. The Ostenautal Route passes the Löwenstedter Sandberge and Schirlbusch nature reserves, which are considered areas with distinctive flora and fauna. The range of landscapes therefore extends from a named circular tour and local trails to natural areas along another route.

The nearby Drelsdorf Costume Museum adds a folklore perspective to this natural and architectural history. It houses an extensive collection that has been assembled since the 1950s.

Excursions and the Regional Context

From Joldelund, you can take excursions to Husum and Flensburg. Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park are considered easy to reach. This offers a broader perspective beyond activities in the area, without equating Joldelund’s specific trails and buildings with regional destinations.

The wider travel destination of North Frisia offers a broader landscape setting. North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum, among others. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, distinctive landscape formations within the same national park. The region is notable culturally, too: among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, North Frisia has the highest density of museums and the largest number of registered cultural monuments. For trip planning, Joldelund’s village church, mill and Geest trails can thus be combined with the wider coastal, island and cultural landscape of North Frisia.
