Horstedt between the marsh and geest
Accommodation in Horstedt
Horstedt lies at the transition between the marsh and geest. Agriculture shapes the village center as well as the surrounding landscape, giving the area a rural character. The neighboring town of Husum is nearby. As an alternative to a hotel, Horstedt also has several holiday apartments and room rentals; check their current availability before booking.
Landscape between the marsh and geest
The Horstedter Bek is one of the Arlau’s tributaries. A historic land consolidation transformed Horstedt’s heathland into a patchwork landscape of hedgerows, which continues to shape the scenery today. Inland dunes along the road toward Husum were afforested as part of the North Program. The local landscape thus brings together natural transitions and traces of earlier land use. Agriculture is evident both in the village center and in the surrounding area. In North Frisia, five islands are part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, including Sylt, Föhr, and Amrum.
Historic routes and local history
During cattle drives from Jutland to Hamburg, the Ox Road passed through Horstedt. The history of Horstedt’s inns also dates back to the time of these cattle drives. The local history thus connects a historic route through Horstedt with the origins of its inns.
The Horstedt theater group is part of local cultural life: since 1982, it has performed a Low German play each year in one or three acts. If you would like to combine your stay with a theater visit, check the performance dates locally in advance.
Cycling and hiking
In summer, a Horstedt cycling group offers rides of 20 to 30 kilometers through the surrounding landscape. As dates and participation requirements may change, check the latest information before planning to join. Another option is the approximately 20-kilometer Husum–Horstedt–Husum hiking route, which is part of the Husum Bay trail network. The cycling rides and hiking route differ both in activity and in format: one offers summer rides with a Horstedt group, while the other is a route within a regional hiking trail network.
Horse riding and possible rest stops
The official local description lists two riding stables in Horstedt; individual businesses may change. Wiesenhof offers qualified riding lessons, an indoor riding arena, an outdoor riding arena, and an outdoor jumping arena; horse stalls are also available to rent. Before planning a visit, check whether the services you need are currently offered. A district-wide riding trail network offers routes in the Horstedt area. Check the specific route locally before setting out on a ride.
The site of the former knacker’s yard may be suitable as a starting point or rest stop. Check the conditions on site before visiting.
