Katharinenheerd can be considered for trip planning in terms of its connections and distinctive historic buildings. The village has its own rail connection, with hourly trains towards St. Peter-Ording and Husum, as well as a bus service. Check current train departure times before setting off. The village church is particularly worth seeing and has a free-standing bell tower.

Village Character and Historic Buildings

At Grandweg 4 stands the Olufhof, also known as Drescherhof, a listed ensemble. It includes a Haubarg farmhouse dating from 1874, with a slate roof and painted barn doors, older gravestones and a farm mound surrounded by a ditch. The year refers to the Haubarg; the gravestones and farm mound are other parts of the ensemble.

North Frisia as a Travel Region

North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, distinctive small marsh islands within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and is part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, North Frisia has the highest concentration of museums and the largest number of registered cultural monuments. Additional options for nature-focused excursions in the wider North Frisia destination include boat trips from Schlüttsiel to Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as to the seal banks.

Nature Information and Protected Areas

The Schlüttsiel Information Centre features a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost daily. In suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. Visitors can observe a rich variety of birdlife at Hauke-Haien-Koog.

The 50-hectare Hallig Südfall lies in Zone 1 of the national park and has a largely natural landscape. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour: options include guided walks or trips with the mudflat horse-drawn carriages. This restriction should be taken into account when planning a visit to Südfall.

Cycle Routes and Regional Specialties

When choosing a cycling tour, you can compare route length and starting point: the Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel; the 35-kilometre Stollberg-Koog Tour starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck-Haus. The difference between the stated route lengths is eight kilometres. The “Eiderstedter Landpartie” cycle tour passes through the wide marshland of North Frisia, offering quiet paths, nature and glimpses of rural life with cows and sheep.

The North Sea Cycle Route runs through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route.” North Frisia can also be reached by bike via the international long-distance Grenzroute cycle route. A regional specialty of northern North Frisia is Pharisäer: hot coffee with a shot of rum and a topping of whipped cream.
