Nordstrand: Wadden Sea, Birdlife and Island History
Accommodation in Nordstrand
Nordstrand is located in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nature, the Wadden Sea and local history shape the range of activities: you can explore routes on foot or by bike, plan birdwatching, and learn about museums, churches and regional traditions.
Wadden Sea, Routes and Birdwatching
The Nordstrand National Park House brings the Wadden Sea to life with a landscape model, an aquarium and other exhibitions about the Wadden Sea and its wildlife. Activities also include workshops on beach finds, guided walks on the tidal flats, night walks, birdwatching tours, literary walks, island cycling tours and salt marsh tours. This gives you different ways to discover the landscape and its nature.
Birdwatching is possible during migration season; in winter, Arctic geese watching is on the program. Beltringharder Koog lies north of Nordstrand. It has four birdwatching hides and a nature trail at the Arlauschleuse. Nordstrand’s Vogelkoje also combines nature and information: it offers guided visits, an information hut, an orchard, a butterfly area and a pond used by resting birds.
Walking routes run along the outer dike, through green fields and along coastal paths overlooking the tidal flats. The Panoramaweg runs from Strucklahnungshörn to Norderhafen. It is accessible and has rest areas and information boards. Tidal-flat walks from Nordstrand can also reach Hallig Nordstrandischmoor and the Rungholt area, with its cultural traces.
Cycling Routes and Distances
Well-maintained cycle paths run along the dike and through green marshland. The Nordstrand Harbor Tour is a themed route of around 25 kilometers that connects five harbors. A shorter route option is the Art and Culture Route, at about 3.6 kilometers. It passes Nordstrand’s churches, the Nordstrand Pottery and the Teestuv. The distance information helps you distinguish a shorter cultural route from a considerably longer cycling loop.
The National Park House is also accessible by bike: the cycle path runs along the road causeway. This lets you tailor your routes, scenery and visits to your own interests without treating the different routes as interchangeable.
History, Crafts and Traditions
The Nordstrand Island Museum covers local island history, including storm surges and seafaring. Nordstrand also has three churches, each with its own architectural and historical character. Together with the Art and Culture Route, they offer a distinct focus alongside nature and Wadden Sea activities: the route connects churches with crafts and the Teestuv.
Nordstrand Pottery and Süderhafen Pottery make handmade ceramics from durable grey stoneware. Nordstrand’s traditions include Biike burning, ring riding and Rummelpottlauf. For a break or regional cuisine, there are cafés, traditional North Frisian restaurants and smaller eateries serving regional specialties.
Getting to Nordstrand and Day Trips
Bus route R140 runs from Husum station to Nordstrand Norderhafen. From there, it is a five-minute walk to the National Park House. Strucklahnungshörn harbor can be reached from Husum by car or bus. The ferry to Pellworm departs from there; seasonal trips also go to Amrum, Sylt, Föhr and Helgoland, as well as to the Halligen of Hooge, Gröde and Nordstrandischmoor. Check current departure times and dates for seasonal trips when planning.
Afterwards, you can check the specific hotel offers for your stay.
