Goldelund offers travelers several points of interest to include in their plans, from rural routes and nature to local history. These include a cycling loop of about ten kilometers, an extensive network of farm tracks, Lütjenholm Forest, nearby heathland dunes, and historic memorials and buildings. The area’s attractions range from outdoor activities in a rural setting to a protected natural area and tangible reminders of local history.

Cycling and Walking

An extensive network of farm tracks is ideal for varied walks and cycle rides through the scenic countryside. For those who prefer a set route, Goldelund Cycle Loop 1 is a good option. The loop is about ten kilometers long and starts and ends in the village center, offering a useful guide for planning a day out. The route includes stretches of country roads with cycle paths, as well as paved and unbound sand surfaces, farm tracks and field paths. If the surface matters for your plans, check the latest route information beforehand. Horse riding is also among the leisure activities available in the Goldelund area.

Forest, Heathland Dunes and Nature

The 200-hectare Lütjenholm Forest lies on the western edge of the municipality. Near Goldelund is the 16.6-hectare Lütjenholmer Heidedünen nature reserve, on the edge of the Soholmer Au; it has been protected since 1938. The heathland dunes provide a habitat for rare heat-loving insects and are one of the few sites in Schleswig-Holstein where the Ural field ant is found. Nature enthusiasts can therefore explore two different aspects: the size and location of a forest, and the long-standing protection and distinctive insect population of the heathland dunes.

Memorials and Architectural History

The memorial in Goldelund commemorates the victims of both world wars. The listed Geestharden house at Hauptstraße 29 dates from 1891. The former school at Westerstraße 7 is also listed and is dated to around 1900. The dates are close together, but only the date of the former school is explicitly approximate. Together, the memorial and the two buildings represent different aspects of history: remembrance of two wars and architectural history around the turn of the 20th century.

North Frisia as a Wider Region

As a wider travel destination, North Frisia offers a distinct perspective on the coast, islands and culture. The region has 441 kilometers of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also has a distinctive cultural profile: among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, it has the highest density of museums and the largest number of listed cultural monuments. It is therefore helpful to distinguish Goldelund’s local routes and historic buildings from the wider coastal and island setting of North Frisia.

Arriving by Car
