Bavarian Forest National Park and Bavaria’s UNESCO sites give a trip different focal points: nature, with marked trails and guided experiences, or culture, centered on historic town centers, palaces and architecture. If you’re looking for a hotel, first consider what interests you want your trip to focus on. The places and themes below offer concrete ideas to help you decide.

Nature and trails in the Bavarian Forest

Bavarian Forest National Park stretches along the Bavarian-Czech border between Bayerisch Eisenstein in the district of Regen and Mauth in the district of Freyung-Grafenau. It opened on October 7, 1970, as Germany’s first national park. The names Falkenstein, Rachel and Lusen also help you get your bearings: more than 13,700 species in total are found in the national park between their summits. For nature enthusiasts, this combination of protected landscapes and biodiversity is a reason in itself to plan time outdoors.

The network includes around 350 kilometers of marked hiking trails, more than 200 kilometers of designated cycling routes and around 80 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails. These figures may change over time. The three types of routes offer different ways to plan your stay; guided national park experiences with expert guides are also available year-round. Check the specific program before your trip.

The Lusen National Park Center near Neuschönau has an information building and an adjoining animal enclosure. Check the facility’s current status before your visit. The national park’s visitor service provides information about getting there and local public transportation. Bavaria’s official tourism service provides information about traveling by car, train and plane. Check travel connections and arrival information before setting off.

World Heritage and architecture

Bavaria’s World Heritage sites represent very different aspects of cultural history. The Old Town of Bamberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since December 11, 1993, and includes 1,200 architectural monuments dating from the 11th to the 18th century. In Bayreuth, the Margravial Opera House is a masterpiece of Baroque theater architecture and one of the few original theater buildings of its era still preserved in Europe. The opera house is also associated with opera and concert performances; check the program before your visit.

The Würzburg Residence offers another example of Baroque design: its magnificent staircase features a ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The royal palaces add a distinct note of their own. Neuschwanstein Castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2025, along with Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and the King’s House on Schachen. Neuschwanstein opened to the public a few weeks after the death of King Ludwig II; this historical opening says nothing about current visitor arrangements, which you should check separately.

The Venus Grotto at Linderhof Palace is an artificial stalactite cave with a lake, waterfall and electric lighting. Access may be seasonal. The King’s House on Schachen lies in the Wetterstein Mountains at an elevation of 1,866 meters and can only be reached on foot. These specific conditions can help you match the sights to your plans without treating the different locations as one combined itinerary.

More cultural and travel ideas

In Augsburg, the Water Management System comprises 22 World Heritage sites. These include weirs, water pumping stations, power plants, fountains and a canoe course. The range of sites makes a visit an opportunity to explore different aspects of water management, rather than just a single structure. Along the Bavarian section of the Danube Limes, visitors can see Roman finds and learn more about Roman life along the Danube at five Roman museums in Kelheim, Regensburg, Straubing, KĂĽnzing and Passau. Check the opening hours of each museum in advance.

Those interested in prehistoric life can find a reconstructed house at the Stone Age village of Pestenacker, along with replicas of Neolithic pottery, tools, weapons and clothing worn by the settlers. The museum visits therefore cover distinct themes: Roman finds along the Danube on the one hand, and a reconstructed house and everyday objects from the Neolithic period on the other. Which stops are right for your trip depends on the historical period you want to explore.

Bavaria’s beer culture can also be discovered in different ways. The ten-kilometer Five-Seidla-Trail in northern Franconia connects five small breweries, each with its own craft beer specialties; the participating breweries may change. For groups, Bavaria also lists beer hikes in Franconia, monastery breweries along the Danube and beer gardens in the heart of the city. Before making plans, check which options are relevant to your visit.
