Urban history, nature and seasonal activities offer different ways to experience a trip to Inn-Salzach. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around the places and themes that interest you most. Museums take centre stage in Burghausen and MĂĽhldorf a. Inn; trails and waterways offer further opportunities to explore nature.

Urban History and Museums

At the Burghausen City Museum, children and adults can experience life at a medieval princely court and the history of Burghausen, from the earliest traces of human life to the present day. Numerous interactive and audio stations make the museum especially interesting for children and school students. Research stations explain the natural environment of the Salzach and Wöhrsee: the Salzach River habitat, adjacent floodplains and beech forests on the slopes, as well as the Salzach gorge known as “Burghauer Enge”. The Burghausen Hammer Mill is considered Europe’s oldest hammer mill still in operation.

The Mühldorf History Centre and Museum explores the district’s past during the Nazi era in its permanent exhibition, “Everyday Life, Armaments, Extermination”. Another exhibition, “Lifeline Inn”, shows how people have lived with the river and how we interact with it today. Mühldorf thus focuses both on the district’s contemporary history and on people’s relationship with the Inn.

Nature Trails, River and Lake

The Innaue Nature Experience Trail features 11 interactive stations, connects the town of MĂĽhldorf a. Inn with the recreational area south of the Inn, and explores the cycle of nature. The Klosterau Forest Experience Trail leads through the Alz floodplain forest. Its stations include a listening tower where visitors can hear native birds and a jungle trail where they can spot native animals.

At the Salzach gorge between Burghausen and Hochburg-Ach, the Salzach carved about 70 metres into the Flinz sand after the last Ice Age. The caves in the impressive steep slope are inhabited by Aesculapian snakes, jackdaws, bats and eagle owls. This description of the landscape links its geological history with the animals that live there.

In summer, you can swim and go boating at Wöhrsee. In winter, the frozen lake is a setting for ice skating and Bavarian curling. As conditions for activities on the ice can vary, check them before visiting in winter.

Beer Culture and Circular Tours

The Beer Pilgrimage to Altötting is an experience in which you walk from brewery to brewery and get to know the beers of the Inn-Salzach region. Check dates separately. The Beer Garden Tour follows a different route: it is a 52.5 km cultural themed tour in a loop through Altötting, Unterneukirchen, Mörmoosen, Tüßling, Polling, Mühldorf a. Inn, Erharting, Winhöring and Neuötting. One activity is described as a walk from brewery to brewery, the other as a circular route with a set distance. Individual breweries’ opening hours may change.
