Discover Bayreuth: Culture, Caves and Landscapes
Accommodation in Bayreuth
There are many reasons to visit the Bayreuth district: cultural attractions, caves, winter sports and regional landscapes. You can focus your trip on garden art and museums, active days at the Ochsenkopf, or Franconian cuisine. The landscape also has many different sides: Franconian Switzerland shapes the western and southern parts of the district with varied, gentle scenery. In the north, the Fichtel Mountains—with their dark forests and granite boulder fields—define the area’s character.
Landscapes and trails
The varied landscapes can help you choose your destinations. The district has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, hiking trails and cycling paths. At the Ochsenkopf, you’ll find well-marked hiking trails, as well as the all-weather Alpine Coaster toboggan run, a mountain-cart track, the North and South gondola lifts, and downhill and singletrack trails.
The cycling network also offers a range of ways to plan your trip. A wide selection of long-distance and themed cycling routes explores the Bayreuth district, passing through different natural landscapes and their distinctive features and tourist highlights. Local circular routes add to the network and make it possible to plan shorter trips within a smaller area. When planning, you can choose between regional cycling routes and circular routes for exploring a smaller area.
The Veldenstein Forest is also home to a wildlife enclosure covering around 40 hectares. Easily accessible paths lead through the grounds, where you can observe native forest animals in their natural habitat. This offers a different natural highlight from the dark forests and granite boulder fields in the northern part of the district, or the scenery of Franconian Switzerland in the west and south.
Garden art, museums and caves
In Eckersdorf, Fantaisie Palace Park brings together design elements from the Rococo, Sentimental and Historicist periods. Garden art is also the subject of the Garden Art Museum at Fantaisie Palace. Opened in July 2000, it was the first museum in Germany at the time devoted exclusively to the history of garden art. The park and museum offer different perspectives on the subject.
Other cultural attractions explore different themes. The German Camera Museum in Plech has more than 15,000 exhibits. In TĂĽchersfeld, the Franconian Switzerland Museum is housed in the so-called Judenhof, a complex of buildings dating from the 18th century. The two museums offer a clear contrast: one focuses on an extensive camera collection, while the other is housed in a historic complex of buildings.
Cave visits also take different forms. The Devil’s Cave in Pottenstein can only be visited as part of a guided tour. At “Sophie at Night” in Sophienhöhle, by contrast, visitors explore the three cave chambers at their own pace, without a group tour; a lighting display and music accompany the experience. If the way you visit matters to you, the difference is clear: a guided tour at the Devil’s Cave or independent exploration at “Sophie at Night.”
Activities at the Ochsenkopf and Franconian cuisine
The Ochsenkopf has a 1,900-metre-long south-facing ski run and four groomed Alpine ski runs. Some have snowmaking facilities and floodlighting until 10 p.m. Along with the hiking trails, lifts, toboggan run, and downhill and singletrack trails, these options show how varied a stay here can be. Depending on what you want to focus on, you can choose between winter sports, hiking and other mountain activities.
The Bayreuth district’s regional cuisine includes numerous beer gardens, most of which are associated with their own breweries, butchers or bakeries. Traditional inns serve Franconian dining-room fare and regional specialities. You can complement your plans for cultural and natural attractions with Franconian cuisine.
The destinations mentioned are located in different parts of the district. Take your own plans for day trips into account when searching for hotels in Bayreuth.
