Fichtelberg combines nature experiences by the lake and on hiking trails with winter sports, as well as a local history brought to life in a visitor mine and several museums. When planning your stay, the season and your main interests are especially important: swimming in Fichtelsee is a summer activity, while an ice rink is prepared in winter only when temperatures permit.

Fichtelsee, the seasons and paths by the water

Fichtelsee is in the northern part of Fichtelberg, at an altitude of about 750 meters, framed by Schneeberg and Ochsenkopf. In summer, it invites visitors to swim; check local conditions before your trip. In winter, an ice rink is prepared beside the lake if temperatures allow.

The barefoot sensory trail starts at the visitor car park in Fichtelberg-Neubau. Its two loops run for about 1.5 kilometers through shady woodland along the lakeshore. This makes it easy to combine a visit to Fichtelsee with a short walk through the lakeside landscape.

Hiking, cycling and winter sports

Marked hiking trails in Fichtelberg pass clear streams, forest meadows and rock formations, continuing to viewpoints across the region. The seven Fichtelberg Siebenstern hiking trails lie at the foot of Ochsenkopf. Art, crafts, nature and the environment are described along the trails, and a hiking map explains these topics. If you would like to choose a specific spring as your destination, you can hike from Fichtelberg to the Weissmainquelle and Fichtelnaabquelle springs. Fichtelberg also offers routes for Nordic walking and mountain biking, as well as opportunities for horseback riding. Availability of riding activities may vary among local providers.

An approximately 2.6-kilometer paved roller-ski track is located in Fichtelberg-Neubau at the Bleaml Alm winter sports center. In summer, it is used for roller-ski training and inline skating. It can also serve as a cycling connection between two long-distance cycling routes. Since these connections can change, check the latest cycling information before setting out. Fichtelberg’s Bleaml-Alm also has a 2.5-kilometer night-ski trail with snowmaking and lighting. Before visiting in winter, check snow and lighting conditions.

Mining and museums in Fichtelberg

The Gleißinger Fels visitor mine is in Neubau, a district of Fichtelberg. Mining played a decisive role in Neubau’s development and was an important source of livelihood for residents until the middle of the 20th century. Gleißinger Fels has a 500-year mining history and is considered the world’s only accessible silver-iron mine. A visit includes a guided tour on an accessible level and documentation on mining history; availability may depend on operating agreements. Check the visiting conditions in advance.

The German Vehicle Museum Fichtelberg combines an automobile museum with an outdoor aircraft exhibition and a special exhibition hall. Exhibits include vintage cars, prototypes, racing cars, motorcycles, aircraft and helicopters; the collection may change over time.

In the district of Neubau, the MĂĽhlgĂĽtl village museum preserves a timber-framed farmhouse dating from 1790. The surviving rooms and farm areas include a cellar, living room, bedroom, stable and small-animal stall. Fichtelberg thus offers different ways to explore local history: mining history at GleiĂźinger Fels and a preserved farmhouse at MĂĽhlgĂĽtl.
