Waischenfeld offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: trails with their own character, the Wiesent and distinctive sights. Depending on whether you want to focus on walking trails, fly fishing, trail running or historic buildings, you can shape your stay around different interests.

Trails, the Wiesent and outdoor activities

Among the tours in the region offered by the town of Waischenfeld is the Waischenfeld Castle Trail. The 900 Years Walking Trail offers a different focus and is equipped with numerous forest sofas for resting. The two trails bring different themes to your plans: the castle trail’s name highlights its connection to the castles, while the forest sofas along the walking trail provide specific places to take a break.

The Wiesent also shapes the character of the town. The river around Waischenfeld is a hotspot for Germany’s fly-fishing scene. The outdoor swimming pool is also located right beside the Wiesent; as a seasonal facility, it fits into plans for the relevant time of year. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours in advance.

For trail runners, the Wiesent Challenge offers another sporting focus: it gives them the chance to experience Waischenfeld’s elevation profile. This means walking trails, a regional tour, fly fishing and trail running cater to different interests without needing to be combined into a single excursion.

The castle complex and cultural sites

The Steinerner Beutel is a distinctive, imposing round tower that rises above Waischenfeld’s castle complex, which is over 900 years old. It is useful to distinguish between the two when considering the sight: the castle complex is the historic ensemble, while the Steinerner Beutel is the striking tower rising above it. Waischenfeld Castle also includes a castle tavern, a beer garden and the Upper Franconia Hunting Centre with training rooms.

Another sight is the Parish Church of St John the Baptist. Together with the castle complex, it offers a second named focus for visitors who would also like to explore church and architectural history during their trip.

The Castle and Beer Trail runs from the car park at the castle above Waischenfeld, along “Schlossberg” road and down to Waischenfeld. Access to the car park is via the district of Gutenbiegen. As trail surfaces and markings may change, check the route before setting out.

The Group 47 Literature Trail adds another cultural connection. The trail grew out of the “Pulvermühle anniversary” in October 2017 and is considered accessible. Check current trail conditions before your visit. This allows you to connect the cultural focus with a specific historical starting point, while the castle trails and named buildings offer other themes for planning your trip.

A regional perspective on Bayreuth

The Bayreuth area as a broader travel destination is shaped by a variety of landscapes. The Franconian Switzerland region, with its varied and gentle landscapes, covers the western and southern parts of the district. In the north, the Fichtel Mountains shape the surroundings with dark forests and granite boulder fields. This contrast offers a distinct regional perspective alongside Waischenfeld’s sights and trails.

The district of Bayreuth has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, hiking trails and cycle paths. Long-distance and themed cycling routes traverse the district, passing through different natural landscapes to their distinctive features and tourist highlights. Local circular cycle routes add density to the network and make it possible to plan shorter routes. If you would like to plan your stay beyond the individual sights, these regional routes provide an additional framework for choosing where to go.
