Landshut: Museums, History and Trails
Accommodation in Landshut
Landshut is a good choice if you would like to include a range of cultural topics and outdoor activities in your trip. The attractions in the area range from archaeological finds and local history to broadcasting, crafts and outdoor exercise. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether you want to focus on museums or also plan to go hiking and visit a wake park.
Museums: from local history to archaeology
The Goldbach MUSEUM opened in March 2025 in the renovated Stiegler-Hof. It is dedicated to the history of the market town of Ergoldsbach and the surrounding villages in the Goldbach Valley. The Archaeological Museum in the Essenbach local heritage center offers an archaeological focus: its more than 300 finds come exclusively from the municipality of Essenbach, and the museum provides an overview of almost 7,500 years of settlement history in the central Isar Valley.
The Vilsbiburg Local History Museum – Kröninger Pottery Museum focuses on “Kröninger ware” and the working and living conditions of potters. Its exhibits are spread across 15 rooms and complement these topics with prehistory and early history, local history, social institutions, domestic culture and crafts. The museum thus combines the history of ceramics with a broader look at everyday life and local history.
The Altdorf Museum is a historic timber building; tree-ring analysis has dated parts of the house to 1547 and 1550. Archaeological finds, excavation results and scientific findings also offer insights into the living conditions and burial customs of past societies.
Everyday life, crafts and special topics
The permanent exhibition “Leib und Seel” at the Geisenhausen Museum uses a range of exhibits to explore how people in the municipality on the Vils kept body and soul together throughout history. The Aichbachtal Local History Museum focuses on prehistory and early history, as well as the development of the village and its surroundings. Its small collection includes excavation finds from the Renaissance and farming and craft tools from past centuries.
The Vinum Celticum Museum offers insights into the world of the Celts and winegrowing in the region. The Bavarian Center for Traditional Costume and Culture in Holzhausen includes a traditional costume and culture museum and a youth education center. Those interested in the history of schools can find an interactive, hands-on concept at the Ahrain School Museum in Oberahrain: lessons are conducted in a historic classroom as they were more than 100 years ago. The Radio Museum in Rottenburg an der Laaber presents a cross-section of all eras of broadcasting. It is advisable to check the latest visitor information in advance for both the school museum and the radio museum.
Hiking and outdoor activities
The Landshut Höhenwanderweg is a good 50 kilometers long and runs across the gentle hills of Lower Bavaria. There is a Kneipp facility directly on the trail in Niederaichbach. In Wörth an der Isar, Waketoolz Wakepark has two cable systems: one 890 meters long and a smaller one about 200 meters long. Since the measurements may change if the facilities are modified, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.
This gives you a choice of different highlights when planning your trip: the museums each offer their own focus on local history, archaeology, crafts and culture; the Höhenwanderweg is a longer route through the hills, while the wake park has two cable systems of different lengths.
