Regen: Culture, Kurpark and Nature
Accommodation in Regen
Regen combines cultural attractions with park and nature experiences, as well as leisure activities for different seasons. When planning your stay, you can choose between museum and event dates, time in the Kurpark, and activities such as ice sports or cross-country skiing.
Culture and History in Regen
In the municipality of Regen, the Lower Bavarian Agricultural Museum presents Lower Bavarian agricultural and social history from the 18th to the early 20th century across around 2,000 square metres. You can set moving models, films and agricultural machinery in motion at the press of a button. This lets you encounter the historical subject not only through exhibits, but also through interactive elements. The museum offers special exhibitions year-round and a wide range of events; regular accompanying programmes and guided tours round out the offerings. When planning your trip, it is a good idea to check the dates for your chosen programme.
During Drumherum, concerts and gatherings of singers and musicians take place throughout Regen’s town centre. The programme lists open-air stages, the Kurpark and inns that welcome musicians as venues. The beer and ice cellars are regularly presented as the historic “Regener Underworld” during public guided tours, which explain their history. This means there are a variety of cultural themes to explore during your stay: agricultural and social history, music events and a guided look at the cellars.
The Pichelsteinerfest is also linked to a special tradition: Regen’s Pichelstein stew. The festival also features a gondola procession with numerous boats, handcrafted around a different theme each year. If you are interested in regional festival culture, you will find both a connection to local cuisine and a boat experience created especially for the occasion.
Kurpark, Art and Nature
Regen’s Kurpark is located on an island in the Schwarzer Regen river. Benches, rose beds, green-roofed pagodas and a small stream along the riverbank invite you to linger. The park also has a sculpture trail featuring works by regional artists. The subjects include flying fish, mythical creatures and a flute player. The Kurpark is fully accessible; check for information about any temporary construction work before your visit.
The quartz rocks near Weißenstein Castle Ruins were placed under nature protection in 1940 because of their geological significance. The Pfahl near Weißenstein is also noteworthy from a natural history perspective: it provides important habitat for rare heat- and drought-loving animal and plant species adapted to nutrient-poor sites. Geology and distinctive habitats are therefore two separate aspects that shape the natural environment around Weißenstein.
Activities and Practical Information
Regen has 13 terrain therapy trails. The Beer Experience Hike covers around five kilometres; almost half of the route runs directly alongside the Regen river. For cross-country skiers, the Grubhügel trail is a specific option, suitable for both skating and classic technique. You can ice-skate at the Regen Ice Sports Centre, the only ice sports centre in the Regen district. Skates and equipment can be rented on site. Check the public skating times before you travel. Regen’s outdoor swimming pool has an 85-metre tube slide.
The timetable is a useful planning resource if you plan to travel by city bus: the bus runs daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. Key stops are the bus station at the railway station and the town square. Check the timetable before your trip if you plan to use the city bus. Another place for visitors to stop by is the Regen Public Library. Spread across four floors, it offers more than 16,000 items, including regional literature, local history materials and travel guides for members, guests and tourists.
