Five circular hiking trails start in Geiersthal and follow different routes through nearby places before returning to Geiersthal. They range from about 5 to 16 kilometers in length, so you can first compare the routes by distance. In town, other points of interest include the church and its historical role, a small green park in the town center, and an area with a pond and children’s playground. Altnußberg Castle, in the municipality of Geiersthal, is another cultural and historical highlight.

Circular Hiking Trails in Geiersthal

All five circular hiking trails return to Geiersthal. Route 1 starts at the branch church in Geiersthal; the other routes differ in length and the places they pass through:

  • Circular Hiking Trail 1 is about 5 km long and passes through Felburg, Knoglberg, and AltnuĂźberg before returning to Geiersthal.
  • Circular Hiking Trail 2 covers 8 km and runs through AltnuĂźberg, Oberleiten, Pfranzgrub, and Holzhaus.
  • Circular Hiking Trail 3 is 12 km long; the route passes through Felburg, Gumpenried, and AltnuĂźberg.
  • Circular Hiking Trail 4 covers 16 km and passes through Fernsdorf, Frankenried, Prenning, Tradweging, Linden, Hartmannsgrub, Oberberging, and Höfing.
  • Circular Hiking Trail 5 is 10.5 km long and runs through AltnuĂźberg, Knoglberg, Gumpenried, and Felburg.

For a direct comparison of distances, Route 1 is the shortest at about 5 km, followed by Route 2 at 8 km. At 10.5 km, Route 5 falls between Route 2 and the 12 km Route 3. Circular Hiking Trail 4 is the longest of the five routes at 16 km. If you are deciding between similar options, the routes themselves also offer a concrete point of comparison: Route 2 passes through Oberleiten, Pfranzgrub, and Holzhaus, while Route 3 passes through Felburg, Gumpenried, and AltnuĂźberg.

The Church and Local History

The branch church in Geiersthal is the starting point for Circular Hiking Trail 1. At the same time, the church in Geiersthal served as the church of the former original parish of Geiersthal; it was first mentioned in official records in 1209. This links the starting point of a hiking trail with the town’s history. The first recorded mention and the church’s former role as a parish church shed light on two distinct aspects of its history.

Park and Gathering Places in the Town Center

A small green park is located in the town center. A recently redesigned area around the town hall, school, church, and “Zum Kramerwirt” hotel also invites you to linger, with a pond and a children’s playground. You’ll find different places to visit in town: a green space in the center and an area with a pond and playground. These spots complement the hiking trails with places to explore in town itself.

AltnuĂźberg Castle and Museum

In the municipality of Geiersthal, Altnußberg Castle was the seat of the knights of Nußberg and Degenberg. It was completely destroyed after the Böckler War. Its foundations were uncovered again in the previous century and partially rebuilt. The site’s history therefore encompasses both its former role as a knights’ seat and its destruction and the later work on its foundations.

The Altnußberg Castle Museum displays weapons, jewelry, household items, and tools found during excavations in the castle ruins. The finds date from the 13th to the 15th century. The museum can be visited by prior arrangement; please contact them in advance. The exhibits thus complement the castle’s history with tangible finds from the ruins.
