Accommodation in Zachenberg
Zachenberg combines hiking trails with chapels and historic buildings. When choosing a hotel, it helps to consider the local highlights: the quarry trail leads to disused quarries and reveals visible traces of past activity. Several chapels and the listed Waidlerhaus add a cultural dimension. This lets you connect your hotel search with the themes you want your trip to focus on. The places below offer different points of interest: a themed circular hike, chapels with their own history, and a building that now serves as a community centre.
Hiking among quarries and chapels
The quarry trail in Zachenberg is a 6.2 km themed circular hiking route that visits nine disused quarries. Along the Zachenberg Quarry Circular Trail, rock faces, crystal-clear water, a viewpoint and places to sit invite you to take a break. Traces of past activity include an old goods crane, abandoned workpieces, compressed-air pipes and pressure tanks. The landscape and technical remains reveal two sides of the same trail: rock and water, as well as the former work carried out in the quarries. A small chapel stands at the highest point of the quarry trail, adding another landmark along the route. As current conditions may vary, check local conditions before setting out.
A circular hiking route from chapel to chapel passes through the municipalities of Patersdorf, Ruhmannsfelden, Zachenberg and Gotteszell. Its theme differs from that of the quarry trail: the latter focuses on disused quarries and industrial remains, while this route links chapels across several municipalities. This gives you different points of interest to choose from: former quarry activities or the connections between chapels and municipalities.
Chapels and historic buildings
The Chapel of St. Anne in Zachenberg is dedicated to Saint Anne, Saint Leonard and Saint Sebastian; it was built in the mid-18th century. The Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers is located in the forest near Eckersberg in Zachenberg. Another small chapel stands at the highest point of the quarry trail and is therefore directly linked to this circular hike. The building history of the Chapel of St. Anne differs from the location details for the Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers; the small chapel is distinguished by its position along the route.
The listed Waidlerhaus dates largely from the first half of the 18th century. After being restored and renovated, it serves as a community centre. Together with the construction date of the Chapel of St. Anne, it offers a glimpse of 18th-century buildings; the Waidlerhaus’s present-day community use adds a distinct element. In Zachenberg, religious dedications, historic building fabric and a building with a communal purpose stand side by side.
