Bayerisch Eisenstein: Border Railway Station, Museums and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Bayerisch Eisenstein
Bayerisch Eisenstein combines railway history with art, glassmaking and hiking trails. Recurring events also shape the local calendar. If you are looking for hotels in Bayerisch Eisenstein, these different highlights can help you plan your stay around your interests.
Border Railway Station and Railway History
The national border runs through the middle of Bayerisch Eisenstein border railway station. Since 2011, the German part of the station has been home to the NaturparkWelten of the Bavarian Forest Nature Park Association. Its exhibition is devoted to railway history and the natural environment of this border town. The five exhibition levels include a European bat centre, a model railway, a ski museum and an interactive exhibition about the Großer Arber. The exhibition’s origins can therefore be linked to a visit that explores both nature and railways. It is best to check current visitor information with the operator.
The Localbahnmuseum Bayerisch Eisenstein offers a different perspective on railways. It is housed in a former locomotive shed, which the Royal Privileged Joint Stock Company of the Bavarian Eastern Railway had built in Bayerisch Eisenstein in 1877. The tour covers the history of the Bavarian local railways from 1876 to the present day. The museum has more than 20 historic steam and diesel locomotives from different eras, as well as other exhibits. The town therefore offers both a broader exhibition on railways and nature and a museum with a particular focus on local railways.
Art, Glass and Events
The Kuns(t)räume grenzenlos gallery is in Bayerisch Eisenstein, 100 metres from the German-Czech border. Together with the border railway station and the Localbahnmuseum, it forms an ensemble of historic buildings. The gallery features contemporary and regional art, as well as works by famous artists from past eras, which are shown anew each year. Glassmaking also has a long tradition in Bayerisch Eisenstein. The glassworks at Bahnhofsallee gives this tradition a modern twist. At the Grenzglashütte, visitors can experience glassmaking up close. It is best to check current access arrangements directly with the operator.
The recurring events take place at different times of the year. A New Year’s concert is held every year on 1 January in the village square, with holidaymakers and local residents invited to attend. In early September, the Bavarian Forest National Park and the municipality of Bayerisch Eisenstein jointly host a large mushroom exhibition at the Eisensteiner ArberLandHalle. If your trip is planned around one of these events, check the dates for the relevant year.
Hiking and Other Activities
All of the town’s hiking trails start at the Bayerisch Eisenstein hiking park. The park also has a natural Kneipp facility and a small adventure playground for children. It is best to check current information about the facilities and the conditions on individual routes before your visit. Two stages of the Goldsteig Trail also offer different connections for planning your walks: Stage N14 connects the Großer Arber with Bayerisch Eisenstein, while Stage N15 connects Bayerisch Eisenstein with the Großer Falkenstein. The endpoint of each stage provides a clear way to tell them apart.
The ski area on the Großer Arber offers slopes ranging from an easy family run to more challenging descents. This is a different focus from the trails that start at the hiking park: here, the emphasis is on skiing downhill, while there, it is on following the local hiking trails. By planning your trip around the season, you can choose between hiking, winter sports and the town’s cultural offerings.
