If you are looking for a hotel in Frauenau, start by considering what you want your stay to focus on: glass culture, walks or a hike to the Rachel. Frauenau offers a range of options, from the cultural history of glass to a route through woodland.

Glass culture in the museum and outdoors

The Frauenau Glass Museum takes you on a journey through the cultural history of glass, from its origins in Mesopotamia to the present day. This historical sweep gives your museum visit a clear focus: you can explore the long history of glass.

The Glass Gardens extend around the Glass Museum and continue at the Eisch glassworks and in the Moosau artists’ quarter. The grounds include more than 30 large glass sculptures and a large adventure playground. The park is open for walks all year round. The Glass Ark stands in front of the Glass Museum, from where you can see the Frauenau parish church. The Glass Gardens thus combine walks with large-scale glass artworks at several of the locations mentioned.

Waldbahn railway stop and EISCH factory outlet

The Waldbahn railway stop is within walking distance through the Glass Gardens. The EISCH factory outlet is about 500 metres from the stop, directly next to the factory in Frauenau. Visitors can try the SENSISPLUS glasses there at length. These glasses have won several awards from wine experts. This provides a specific opportunity to try glassware, complementing the museum and outdoor grounds. If you are planning a trip on the Waldbahn, check the timetable in advance, as services may change.

Hiking to the Rachel and woodland

The hike to the Rachel starts in Frauenau at the car park by Gut Oberfrauenau and leads through unspoilt woodland to the saddle between the Großer Rachel and Kleiner Rachel peaks. The route also takes in the Rachelwiese meadow at an elevation of 1,360 metres, the highest Schachten (historic mountain pastures) in the Bavarian Forest. From an observation platform, you can enjoy a view of Lake Rachel. The Waldschmidt House is currently not open for business.

More attractions in the wider Regen destination

In the wider Regen destination, the beer and ice cellars in Regen are regularly featured on public guided tours as the historic “Regener Unterwelt” (Regen Underworld), where their history is explained. At Weißenstein Castle Ruins, the quartz rocks were placed under nature protection as early as 1940 because of their geological significance. The Pfahl at Weißenstein is an important habitat for rare heat- and drought-loving animal and plant species adapted to nutrient-poor sites.

There are 13 terrain therapy trails in and around the town of Regen. Ice skates and equipment can be hired on site at the Regen Ice Sports Centre. The Grubhügel cross-country ski trail can be used for both skating and classic diagonal stride techniques. Another option is the beer experience hike: it covers about five kilometres, with almost half the route running directly alongside the Regen river. These activities complement the attractions in Frauenau with more things to do in the wider Regen destination.
