In the Coburg destination, experiences range from the history of toy-making to historic townscapes and outdoor trails. In Neustadt bei Coburg, the development of the toy industry takes centre stage; Ahorn offers insights into architectural and everyday history, while Seßlach’s old town is defined by its town wall, defensive towers and gates. Each place has its own focus: you can explore a museum topic, join a guided tour of an old town or make a hike the centrepiece of your visit.

Museums and Architectural History

The Museum of German Toy Industry in Neustadt bei Coburg showcases the history of the trade, from home-based work to factory production. The collection of traditional costume dolls, with around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries, offers a special look at its international dimension. Hands-on activities and a museum rally add activities that engage visitors directly with the museum’s themes.

In Ahorn stands the Alte Schäferei, a baroque estate sheep farm built in 1713. It displays tools from agricultural and craft trades, painted furniture and other artefacts from the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Ahorn thus brings together the history of the building and insights into former working and living conditions. If you would rather spend time outdoors than visit a museum, you can also find the Panorama Trail there: it is 7 km long, takes 1.5 to 2 hours and is suitable for pushchairs. Its length, duration and suitability make it easier to fit the trail into your own day’s plans.

Old Town and Trails Around SeĂźlach

Seßlach’s old town is enclosed by a fully preserved town wall with defensive towers and three gates. From April to September, guided tours of the old town take place on Sundays at 2 pm; no advance booking is required. The Marterl Trail around Seßlach offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. The hike provides insights into wayside monuments, their history and their religious significance. You can therefore choose between a tour of the historic townscape and a themed trail, each with a different focus.

Nature, Views and Regional History

In Rödental, the Froschgrundsee is a reservoir with cycling and hiking trails leading to and around it. A nature reserve borders the lake. Rosenau Palace in Rödental adds a biographical connection to the town’s history: it was the birthplace of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. A nature trail in Rödental also passes Lauterburg Castle. If you are interested in viewpoints, you can climb the Henneberger Warte free of charge; from there, you can enjoy a view of the Rodach Valley.

Getting Your Bearings on the Way

You can also take travel to an excursion destination into account when planning: the WildPark Schloss Tambach is served by bus route 8301. From the “Tambach, Weitramsdorf” stop, it is a short walk to the park. Check the timetable before travelling. To make the most of the other experiences in the Coburg destination, it is worth deciding in advance whether your focus is on collections and architectural history, a guided tour, a hike or the landscape views.
