When choosing a hotel in Lautertal, the focus of your trip can be the deciding factor: nature, hiking trails or places of cultural and historical interest. The municipality brings together a range of themes, so you do not have to limit your plans to just one type of outing.

Nature and views

Rottenbacher Moor lies in northern Lautertal. It is a habitat for many rare and specialised species, an important carbon store and a regulator of the water balance. The moor offers a special connection with nature: its importance is reflected both in its biodiversity and in these functions for the climate and water balance.

Lauterberg offers a different perspective. From there, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the Coburg region. The moor and the viewpoint offer different highlights: one is a distinctive habitat, while the other affords views across the wider landscape.

Hiking trails and getting around

Circular Trail L11 runs from Oberlauter via Lauterberg and through Tiefenlauter before returning to the starting point. The L1 Kirchweg 6 circular trail follows a different route: it forms a figure of eight through the districts of Lautertal, along the western ridge and through the Lautertal valley. The main difference between the two trails is their route as described: L11 focuses on returning to the starting point, while L1 follows a figure of eight through several parts of the municipality.

Hiking trails in the municipality of Lautertal were newly signposted as part of a funding project. Another hike, on a clearly specified date, took place on 25 August 2024. Its route passed Mucklbrunnen, the Weihersmühle monument, the Görsdorfer wall and heath, and Rottenbacher Moor. Along the way, the hike linked natural and cultural sites in Lautertal.

Circular Trail L11 can be reached from Coburg on city bus route 2 and from Rottenbach on regional bus route 8318. The destination stop is called “Oberlauter Wendeplatz”. Check the current timetable before travelling to make sure your journey matches the route information given.

Local history and culture

The Gerichtslinde stands in Unterlauter and is one of the oldest trees in the district of Coburg. The Kreuzstein, bearing wheel and cross symbols, is located right next to it. The two features stand side by side, bringing together a remarkable tree and a stone marker of local history.

The history of the mills is also part of the development of the villages in Lautertal. Löhnersmühle, Massemühle and Welkersmühle shaped the local economy for centuries.

In Tiefenlauter, St Francis Chapel is located on the former route of the historic Werrabahn railway. This site therefore combines a chapel with a visible link to the former railway line. Alongside the hiking and nature destinations, it offers another point of cultural and historical interest to include in your travel plans.

Cycling and winter sports

A cycle path from Oberlauter to Tiefenlauter was inaugurated in September 2026. For winter days, Neukirchen has two ski lifts operated by WFC Coburg-Neukirchen: a T-bar lift and a small beginner lift. Whether the lifts are operating depends on conditions and schedules; check the latest operating information before you travel.

The Gletscheralpe serves drinks and food while the ski lifts are open. Its offering is therefore tied to the lifts’ opening hours. Bear this in mind when planning your visit, and check whether the lifts will be open at the time of your visit.
