Miltenberg: Half-timbered Houses, Museums and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Miltenberg
Half-timbered Houses and Museums in the Town Centre
On Miltenberg’s market square, half-timbered houses spanning four centuries form a harmonious ensemble around the Renaissance market fountain. It was built between 1583 and 1589. The Stadt Museum presents Miltenberg’s urban and regional history in three historic half-timbered houses on the market square. Here, the historic townscape and the history of the region meet in one place.
The permanent collection at Miltenberg Castle Museum features 16 Greek and Russian icons from the 16th to the 19th century alongside works by contemporary artists. The exhibition concept has been under revision since 2024. Certified tour guides accompany groups or individual travellers on guided tours of the Old Town. As the specific tour formats may change, check the current offer in advance.
Cultural Events in the District
The Miltenberg District Cultural Weeks begin each year from mid-September. The varied programme is for young and old alike and includes concerts featuring classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and electronic music events. The exact event dates vary from year to year, so if you plan to visit for the Cultural Weeks, check the dates for your stay.
The district’s International Choir Competition is also one of the longest-running international choir competitions. At past competitions, a close personal connection has repeatedly developed between visiting choirs and local residents. Event dates vary.
Trails, Sea of Rocks and Town Park
The “3 im Wald” adventure trail combines a barefoot nature trail, an art trail and a tree-information trail. It brings together three different themes along one route: experiencing nature, art and learning about trees.
The Sea of Rocks is a natural monument formed during the last ice ages—from 2.58 million to 11,700 years ago. A town walk starts at Mildenburg Castle and leads through the municipal forest and through the Steintor gate. After turning at the Steintor, the Sea of Rocks is about 600 metres away.
Miltenberg Town Park offers a different way to enjoy nature. It was laid out in the style of an English park and as an arboretum in the late 19th century. Today it contains nearly 150 different species of trees and shrubs. Nature here ranges from a geological natural monument and a trail with three distinct themes to a park with a diverse collection of woody plants.
In the District: Landscapes, Cycling Routes and Wine
Miltenberg District lies between the Odenwald and Spessart ranges and has deeply incised river and stream valleys. On the Main Cycle Route, you can discover numerous castles and castle ruins in the district, along with their history. The Main also plays an important role in leisure activities for many campers.
For trips in the Odenwald, hikers and cyclists can use the NeO-Bus and NaTourBus; bicycle trailers are available especially for cyclists. As this transport information is seasonal, check the latest details about bus services and bicycle trailers before your trip.
Regional wines are also part of the district’s visitor experience: you can visit one of the many Häckerwirtschaften (seasonal wine taverns) or one of the wine festivals and enjoy the region’s wine. Häckerwirtschaften and wine taverns offer an authentic atmosphere for enjoying fine wines. Opening days for individual venues and wine festival dates vary. If a particular visit is important to your plans, check the date in advance.
