Discover Großheubach
Accommodation in Großheubach
Winegrowing, historic buildings and a variety of trails are at the heart of Großheubach. The Bischofsberg represents the wine-growing landscape on the Lower Main; in the town and at Engelberg, the town hall, church, chapels and monastic history tell of different eras. There are also hiking trails and a stopping point for river hikers on the Main.
Winegrowing on the Bischofsberg
Großheubach’s Bischofsberg is a wine-growing area on the Lower Main with a favorable climate. Around 50 hectares of vineyards are interspersed with orchards. Vineyards and orchards together shape the character of this landscape.
Since 1989, the Bischofsberg has had a wine trail created by the Großheubach Winegrowers’ Association. It offers a thematic introduction to winegrowing alongside views of the vineyards. Wine also plays an important role in Großheubach’s many Häckerwirtschaften: wine tastings are offered there, and producers sell their wines directly to customers.
Town hall, church and wine history
The historic town hall was built in 1611/1612 in the old Franconian half-timbered style. It served as the seat of a deputy bailiff for the district of Prozelten and today marks the entrance to the historic old town. Its construction and former function connect the building with Großheubach’s administrative and local history.
The Catholic parish church of St. Peter also shapes the town’s historic appearance: it acquired its present-day look between 1895 and 1897. The Abendanz House offers another link to the wine trade; in the 18th century, it housed a branch of an important Franconian wine merchant.
Trails to Engelberg and through the region
The historic route from Großheubach to Engelberg climbs 612 stone steps known as the Engelsstaffeln. Six wayside chapels featuring scenes from the Passion and Stations of the Cross line the ascent. The destination is also connected with pilgrimage history: a monastery was built on Engelberg in 1630 after the number of pilgrims had increased.
An alternative hike to Engelberg leads from Großheubach through vineyards and forests between Großheubach and Miltenberg. This means the route to Engelberg can be taken either via the historic Engelsstaffeln or on a hike through vineyards and woodland.
The Franconian Red Wine Hiking Trail also passes through Großheubach. Its route runs through Großwallstadt, Obernburg, Elsenfeld, Rück, Erlenbach, Klingenberg, Großheubach, Miltenberg and Bürgstadt. The Eselsweg is over 111 kilometers long and runs from Schlüchtern or Bad Orb via Großheubach to other towns. Anyone planning one of these routes should check the current trail conditions before setting out.
The Großheubach 1 cultural trail, “Von Hecke zu Häcke in Hebboch,” runs through the forests of Busigberg and Nebelkappe. These woodland areas add another theme to trails around Großheubach, alongside the vineyards and the historic route to Engelberg.
