Kleinwallstadt: Templar House, Old Castle and Forest Nature Trail
Accommodation in Kleinwallstadt
Kleinwallstadt offers several starting points for a stay: Templar House and the Old Castle represent different aspects of the area’s history, while the Forest Nature Trail and Orchard Experience Trail explore themes related to nature and remembrance. You can explore the town according to whichever of these interests you most.
Historic Sites in Kleinwallstadt
Templar House is one of the oldest secular buildings in Main Franconia. Its south façade still gives an idea of what the house must have looked like originally. The façade therefore provides a tangible point of reference for appreciating the building’s historic appearance. Secular buildings are non-religious structures. In the Kleinwallstadt Forest, the Old Castle was a medieval castle complex dating from the second third of the 13th century. At Templar House, the focus is on its classification as a secular building; for the Old Castle, the type of fortification and its period are specified.
The Forest Nature Trail: Nature and Sound
The Forest Nature Trail focuses on trees and animals of the forest, as well as its past and present functions and hunting. Displays with pictures and text introduce these topics. When you arrive in Kleinwallstadt, follow the signs towards “Schule/Schwimmbad” to reach the Forest Nature Trail. Signage may change, so check the signs on site.
Right by the wildlife clearing, there is a raised hide that anyone can use to observe wildlife. The sound tree stands at the end of the Forest Nature Trail. A small hand-cranked music box is attached to one end; when you turn it, you can hear the melody at the other end. The sound tree is considered Kleinwallstadt’s longest musical instrument and possibly also the longest in the Miltenberg district.
The Orchard Experience Trail and Korbinian Aigner
A Korbinian apple tree grows along the Orchard Experience Trail, commemorating Korbinian Aigner. Aigner was a priest and pomologist who showed courage during the Nazi era. On June 2, 2026, the municipality described the tree as having been planted recently. The two trails have different focuses: the Forest Nature Trail is devoted to forests, animals and hunting, while the Korbinian apple tree on the Orchard Experience Trail commemorates Aigner.
Miltenberg as a Regional Setting
The wider Miltenberg destination offers additional cultural and landscape attractions. The Stadt Museum presents the history of Miltenberg and the surrounding region in three historic half-timbered houses at Miltenberg’s market square, the Schnatterloch. The Miltenberg district lies between the Odenwald and Spessart ranges and features deeply incised river and stream valleys.
The Miltenberg district’s cultural weeks take place every year from mid-September, with a varied program for all ages; exact dates vary. Musical events include concerts of classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and electronic music events. Check the relevant event dates if the cultural weeks are important to your travel plans.
For trips to the Odenwald, the wider Miltenberg destination offers the NeO-Bus and NaTourBus for hikers and cyclists; bicycle trailers are available specifically for cyclists. Check seasonal transport information before you travel.
