Großwallstadt offers two clearly distinct starting points for planning a trip: the MainAuen Water Park for a stay by the water, and historic buildings dating back several centuries. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether swimming, cycling or local history is the main focus of your trip.

Water Park and Cycling

The MainAuen Water Park’s approximately three-hectare sunbathing area includes a bathing lake with a sandy beach and a solar-heated swimming pool. A 58-metre waterslide rounds out the facilities. The lake and pool offer different swimming experiences: one features a sandy beach and bathing lake, while the other centres on the solar-heated pool. The water park is right next to a cycle path, making it a useful reference point when planning a cycling tour. Availability is seasonal, and facilities may also change. Check the opening times and the latest information about the waterslide before your visit.

Buildings and Local History

The Großwallstadt Local History Museum was established in the former “Liebschen Gut”, dating from the 16th century. Another historic feature is the draw well: it has a circular well surround with a gabled well frame and bears the date 1566. The buildings around the parish church also represent different periods. The church includes a fortification dating from the 13th century; the round tower is a remnant of the town’s fortifications from the 15th century. Großwallstadt also has half-timbered houses dating from the 16th century. The “Der Ochsen” inn is dated 1595.

These dates provide a timeline for the town’s history: the fortification is among the oldest buildings mentioned, while the round tower and half-timbered houses point to later centuries. The draw well adds a specific year, 1566, to this overview. Großwallstadt thus offers a variety of architectural landmarks that can be distinguished by their features and dates.

The Historic Market

The Großwallstadt Historic Market takes place every two years. Themes of the historic market events include the Middle Ages and the Viking Age. This makes the market a date-dependent event, unlike the buildings that are there year-round. If you would like to include it in your trip, check the dates of that year’s event before planning your stay.

Miltenberg as a Broader Travel Destination

The wider destination of Miltenberg offers a distinct regional setting. Miltenberg district lies between the Odenwald and Spessart ranges and features deeply incised river and stream valleys. The TAG Churfranken e.V. association brings together 25 places, most of them along the Main. The Main Cycle Route provides a way to discover numerous castles and castle ruins in the district, along with their history. For tours in the Odenwald, the NeO-Bus and NaTourBus are available to hikers and cyclists; bicycle trailers are provided specifically for cyclists. As these transport services are seasonal, check the specific information before travelling.

Miltenberg’s town park was laid out at the end of the 19th century in the style of an English park and as an arboretum. Today, it contains nearly 150 different species of trees and shrubs. The Felsenmeer is a natural monument formed during the last ice ages, between 2.58 million and 11,700 years ago. The town walk runs from its starting point at Mildenburg through the municipal forest and through the Steintor. After turning at the Steintor, the Felsenmeer is about 600 metres away. This distance is not a walking-time estimate.

The Miltenberg district’s Cultural Weeks also provide a seasonal reference for trip planning: they take place every year from mid-September. The programme includes classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and electronic music. The exact dates vary from year to year; check them if you want to plan your stay around an event.
