Discover Mömlingen: Geology, History and Churches
Accommodation in Mömlingen
If you’re looking for hotels in Mömlingen, local history, church architecture and cycling options can shape your travel plans. The town offers a variety of themes to guide your choice: geological traces along the “Fire and Water” Geopark trail, a school and local history museum, an archaeological exhibition, and churches from different periods. There is also a mountain bike circuit and regional cycling routes. You can consider whether you’re most interested in natural history, local everyday life, religious architecture or cycling routes.
Geology and History Along the Geopark Trail
At Station 3 of the “Fire and Water” Geopark trail, you can see basalt tuffs and a basalt dyke. Both were formed during the eruption of the “Mühlhansenloch Maar.” The trail also passes the former “Berta” iron ore mine, which dates back to the 19th century. Another historical feature along the route is a reconstructed section of the Electoral Mainz Landwehr, a former border fortification from the 15th century. Geological formations, mining history and a historical fortification thus feature as distinct themes along the same trail.
The Museum and Mömlingen’s Local History
Since 1997, the Mömlingen School and Local History Museum has been housed on the second floor and in the attic of the “Alte Schule” civic center. The civic center that houses the museum was built from Mömlingen sandstone. The archaeological exhibition “Longhouses and Mounted Warriors” covers topics ranging from the first Stone Age settlers to Mömlingen in the modern era. It has been open to the public since September 2017; check current access arrangements before visiting.
Another focus of local history is home-based tailoring. From the late 19th century through the 1960s, it provided many people in Mömlingen with a good income. Before that, many people—mostly small farmers—had only been able to live modestly. The home tailor’s workshop set up in the School and Local History Museum had previously been exhibited at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. Archaeological topics and the history of a local trade offer different perspectives on Mömlingen across time.
Churches from Different Periods
The Baroque Church of St. Martin dates from 1774 to 1777 and is Mömlingen’s landmark. The Catholic parish church of Corpus Domini was built right next to St. Martin between 1961 and 1963. It is considered an example of modern church architecture and has two stained-glass windows that extend the full height of the building. The churches’ construction dates highlight the contrast between their periods; the windows are a striking feature of the modern church.
Mountain Bike Circuit and Regional Cycling Routes
The permanent mountain bike circuit in Mömlingen starts at the Löwen car park opposite the town hall. Three regional loop routes also start and finish in Mömlingen. “Through the Mümling Valley to Bad König” runs via Lützel-Wiebelsbach, Breitenbrunn, Bad König, Höchst and Breuberg. The “Loop to Veste Otzberg” goes via Wald-Amorbach, Wiebelsbach, Otzberg, Höchst and Breuberg. “From the Mümling Valley to the Main Valley” runs via Seckmauern, Lützel-Wiebelsbach, Rai-Breitenbach and Hainstadt before returning to Mömlingen.
The names of the loop routes and their intermediate stops make the different itineraries easy to picture: they lead toward Bad König, to Veste Otzberg or into the Main Valley. Check the route and distance details before setting out. When choosing a hotel in Mömlingen, these cycling options—as well as the Geopark, museum and churches—can help you plan your trip around your interests.
