Eschau lies at the foot of Geishöhe in the Elsava Valley and in the Spessart Nature Park. Cultural trails, Wildenstein Castle, art in Sommerau and leisure activities offer different ways to shape your stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Eschau, these interests can help you plan your days.

Cultural Trails and Wildenstein Castle

The 7.5 km European Cultural Trail “Wildenstein Castle” explores the cultural landscape between Eschau and the castle. On the return route, it passes through the Elsava Valley along the old railway line. The castle is a medieval fortification on a ridge of Sommerberg, above Wildenstein, a village belonging to Eschau. It is freely accessible and has several information boards. As conditions on site may change, check the current situation before your visit.

The European Cultural Trail in Hobbach is about 7 km long and has an elevation gain of around 100 m. From St. John’s Church, it leads past Dillhof and Oberaulenbach Castle, by the Wolfsgrube and a viewpoint into the Elsava Valley, to the Hobbach school camp and back to St. John’s Church. At 7.5 km and about 7 km, the two cultural trails are similar in length; the Hobbach trail also includes around 100 m of elevation gain. You can take length and elevation profile into account separately when planning. The Spessart Trail 2 long-distance hiking route also passes through Eschau.

Art and Architectural History in Sommerau

Sommerau Sculpture Garden features numerous surrealist sculptures by artist Karin Günther, set among flower beds, shrubs and old trees. In the background are the former Fechenbach noble palace and the small “Malepartus” castle. Four guided tours are held each year between May and September, usually on a Sunday afternoon. They first focus on Karin Günther’s artistic work, followed by the history of the former noble palace and its residents. Check the specific dates before your trip.

A wing of Sommerau Moated Castle, built in 1650, has been preserved, along with the remains of an older defensive tower and the surrounding moat. The moated castle is privately owned and is not open to the public. In some cases, a visit may be possible by prior arrangement with the owner.

Leisure Activities and Getting There

The Wildensee recreation area offers a lake, a relaxation jetty, a water-treading facility, a boules court and barbecue huts. In Hobbach, the railway embankment has been turned into a small park for local recreation, with benches, a playground, a mud-play area and a basketball hoop. The facilities offer different options: Wildensee brings together several leisure activities, while the railway embankment park includes areas for play and relaxation. Check the current condition of the facilities before visiting.

The Spessart Adventure Centre cannot be reached directly by car. Visitors park at the kindergarten or on a side street, then walk through nature to the centre, a journey of about twelve minutes. As directions may change, check them again before setting off.
