The Bavarian Forest Open-Air Museum in Tittling is one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. On 20 hectares, you can visit more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest dating from 1580 to 1890. The buildings show different aspects of historical everyday life: the museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, blacksmiths, chapels and field monuments. A special highlight is Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666. Residential and agricultural buildings thus sit alongside evidence of community life across the site.

Culture and nature in the Passau region

Cultural and nature experiences can also be found at various locations beyond the museum village. The region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal baths. Its widely known thermal springs include those in Bad FĂĽssing and Bad Griesbach. These regional highlights offer different ways to plan your stay: you can focus on historic buildings, routes through the countryside or the thermal springs.

The Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre is located in the Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. This places another nature experience centre in a clearly defined section of the river landscape. The visitor programme may change, so check which activities are currently planned before arranging a visit.

Hiking and cycling

Two distinct regional starting points are highlighted for hiking: the Granite Adventure Hiking Trail runs around Hauzenberg, while the Smugglers’ Trail is in the Danube Pearls area. If you would like to plan your outing around a particular landscape, you can use these locations as a starting point. The two trails represent different points of reference within the Passau region.

The Danube Cycle Path also runs through the Passau region. Following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Association (ADFC), it received a 4-star rating. As certification status can change, it is advisable to check the current rating before planning your tour. This lets you treat cycling and hiking as separate areas of interest rather than combining them into a single outing.

Cultural events throughout the year

From April to September, the historic buildings in the Bavarian Forest Open-Air Museum provide a backdrop for music and cabaret days featuring Bavarian entertainment. Combining a museum visit with the events programme may be useful when planning your dates. If a particular performance is to determine your travel dates, check the specific event dates in advance.

In Ortenburg, the Ortenburg Castle Culture programme runs from April to December and includes music events, cabaret performances, spooky nights at the castle, lectures and guided visits. It is organised by the Ortenburg Castle Association. The series complements the seasonal cultural days in Tittling with another events programme in the Passau region. For both programmes, plan your trip around the dates relevant to your stay and check them in advance.

Plan a stay that suits you

These options are located in different places and appeal to different interests. If a particular event date is the focus of your trip, factor it into your plans early. Choosing a clear focus can help you search for hotels in Passau that match the experiences that matter to you during your stay.
