Fürstenstein: Pilgrimage History and Circular Trails
Accommodation in Fürstenstein
Fürstenstein combines the history of a pilgrimage with circular trails through forests, meadows and a cultivated landscape shaped by human activity. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Fürstenstein, you can first choose your focus from these themes: local history, hiking, or other cultural and natural attractions in the wider Passau destination.
Pilgrimage and Remembrance in Fürstenstein
The Chapel of Grace in Altötting was replicated in Fürstenstein in 1629. During the Thirty Years’ War, the replica was intended to spare pilgrims the dangerous journey to Altötting. Every year, many pilgrims come to Fürstenstein to venerate the image of grace and ask for help and support. History and recurring religious practice coexist here in the same place.
There is also a place of remembrance in the district of Nammering: a memorial, a memorial stone and the “Track of Remembrance” commemorate the victims. In the municipality of Fürstenstein, these memorial sites add another historical focus to the history of pilgrimage.
Two Circular Trails of Different Lengths
The Oheweg is a peaceful, nature-oriented circular hiking trail around Fürstenstein. The 7.5-kilometre route leads through forests and open meadows, as well as along the Kleine Ohe stream. The Steinbruchweg is an 11-kilometre circular trail through the cultivated landscape around Fürstenstein and Nammering.
In terms of distance, the Oheweg is 3.5 kilometres shorter. The landscapes described also offer different highlights: forests, meadows and the Kleine Ohe shape the Oheweg, while the cultivated landscape takes centre stage on the Steinbruchweg. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
The municipality of Fürstenstein also has a Kneipp pool by the path near the Kollnbergmühlweiher pond. This spot by the pond adds another specific point of interest in the municipality to the hiking trails.
Culture and Nature in the Wider Passau Destination
In the wider Passau destination, the Bavarian Forest Museum Village in Tittling offers insight into regional architectural and everyday history. Visitors can see more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest, dating from 1580 to 1890, across 20 hectares. The museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments. It also features Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666. While the Chapel of Grace in Fürstenstein reflects the history of pilgrimage, historic buildings and crafts take centre stage in Tittling.
Another regional point of interest is the Haus am Strom nature experience centre. It is located in the narrow Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. The Danube Cycle Path runs through the Passau region and received a four-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Association. As its certification status may change, check it before planning your route if needed.
The Passau region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal spas. Well-known thermal springs are located in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. For culture enthusiasts, the Ortenburger Schlosskultur, an event series organised by the Friends of Ortenburg Castle, features musical events, cabaret performances, ghost nights at Ortenburg Castle, lectures and guided visits from April to December. Check event dates for the relevant season.
Other hiking trails are also part of the regional offering: the Granit-Erlebnis-Wanderweg runs around Hauzenberg, while the Schmugglerweg is in the Donau-Perlen region. This allows Fürstenstein’s pilgrimage history and two circular trails to be explored as distinct local highlights, while the wider Passau destination offers additional cultural, cycling and nature themes.
