Passau combines distinctive architectural and art history with the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, as well as designated cycling and hiking trails. Its various facets reveal what Passau has to offer travelers with different interests.

Veste Oberhaus and fresco art

More than 800 years old, Veste Oberhaus is one of the largest surviving castle complexes in Europe. Within its historic walls, the Oberhaus Museum presents exhibitions on Passau’s history and medieval life in the castle. Here, the city’s history and life inside a medieval castle complex come together in one place.

At the heart of Veste Oberhaus is St. George’s Chapel, home to a unique fresco cycle dating from the 14th century. The monastery buildings at Niedernburg house another destination for those interested in historic painting: the fresco museum, with secco paintings more than 800 years old. The shrine of “Mary’s Protection” and the tomb in Niedernburg Monastery are also part of a long pilgrimage tradition. Since the 15th century, they have been destinations for numerous pilgrims, most of them Hungarian.

Churches and Passau’s architectural history

Passau Cathedral is an important Baroque church north of the Alps. After the fire of 1662, Carlo Lurago and Giovanni Battista Carlone gave the cathedral a distinctive Italian architectural character. In the cathedral, you can hear the organ, with five separate installations, 17,974 pipes and 233 stops—a feature in its own right alongside the building’s history.

On Passau’s southern waterfront along the Inn, the Baroque Jesuit Church of St. Michael and the former Jesuit house shape the cityscape, together giving it the appearance of an Italian city. High above the Innstadt district stands the Baroque pilgrimage church of Mariahilf, with the 17th-century St. Paul Monastery beside it. The entrance to the chapel is at Neutorgraben: a covered staircase with 321 steps leads up to it. Mariahilf thus combines religious architecture with a clearly described route.

Three rivers and different perspectives

The Danube, Inn and Ilz meet at the Three Rivers Corner. The Batterie Linde viewpoint offers a unique view of Passau’s historic old town and all three rivers. The Wittelsbach Fountain presents another interpretation of the rivers: built in 1903, it features Mary standing on the central column, while three angels symbolize the Danube, Ilz and Inn. This lets you encounter the confluence and its artistic depiction in two different forms.

The landscape also has a clearly defined connection to nature: Oberhauser Leite is part of the Donauleiten Nature Reserve, which stretches from Passau to Jochenstein. This regional natural area adds a distinct landscape perspective to views of the city and its historic buildings.

Comparing hiking trails and a cycling route

Hiking options range from a specific circular route to a longer trail. The Ilztal hiking loop runs from Passau to the Triftsperre and back. It is 8.5 kilometers long, takes 2 hours and 15 minutes, and is rated easy. By contrast, the Ilz hiking trail runs from Passau-Hals via the Triftsperre and FĂĽrsteneck to the Dreiburgenland region and is about 70 kilometers long. These figures make the difference in distance and time easy to grasp: one is a circular route with a stated duration, while the other is a much longer hiking trail.

For the longer Ilz route, it is worth checking the current trail signs before setting out, as route details can change when the signage or trail designation is updated. For cyclists, the Austrian Danube Cycle Path runs from Passau through Vienna in Austria to Bratislava in Slovakia and is about 380 kilometers long. The cycling route and the two hiking trails therefore offer different ways to include outdoor activity in your trip, though they differ in their route characteristics.

Getting oriented when arriving by Danube cruise ship

Mooring points for Danube cruise ships are located in the old town or close by, with direct connections to the city center and easy access on foot to numerous sights. For travelers arriving in Passau by Danube cruise ship, this offers a practical point of reference for finding their way around the city. Cultural history, riverside scenery, pilgrimage sites and trails also offer different themes to shape your trip to Passau around.
