Explore Breitenberg through a range of activities: circular hiking trails with clearly stated distances, a weaving museum featuring regional crafts, sports activities and a bathing pond. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on hiking, culture or outdoor activities without snow.

Circular Trails and How They Differ

The Butterfly Trail is a circular hiking trail of around 6 km in the municipality of Breitenberg. Along the way, it passes the historic country doctor’s villa, also known as Villa Breitenberg, and the historic hammer mill. This means two historic buildings lie directly on this route.

The Chapel Trail and the Granite Trail are also circular hiking trails. At 2.5 km, the Chapel Trail is the shortest of these three routes; the Granite Trail is 3.8 km long and the Butterfly Trail around 6 km. The Dichtl Chapel lies along the main route of the Chapel Trail, and a detour leads to Laus Chapel. The three distances provide a concrete basis for comparing the routes.

The family-friendly Swing Trail runs mostly along paved side roads with little traffic and is also suitable for pushchairs. The route is therefore distinguished by its described road surface and the option of bringing a pushchair.

Weaving Museum and Crafts

The Breitenberg Weaving Museum displays equipment used for processing flax, weaving, dyeing and blue-printing. It also features painted farmhouse furniture from Breitenberg. The exhibition thus brings together several aspects of textile production and traditional rural furnishings.

In 2026, the museum was open from 12 May through 15 October. Check the latest opening information when planning future visits. In 2026, guided tours for groups and school classes of ten or more were available at any time by arrangement; both advance booking and the minimum group size are part of this arrangement.

The recurring programme includes museum festivals featuring demonstrations of the journey from flax to linen and traditional rural crafts. They take place every year on the first Sunday in July, August and September. Check the dates and whether the festivals are going ahead before making plans.

Sport, Water and History

At the Breitenberg Nordic Centre, you can ski on cross-country trails. These depend on snow conditions; when there is no snow, you can train on the roller-ski track. At the bathing pond in Gegenbach, you can swim, dive and snorkel. There is also a sunbathing area. Cross-country skiing and training on the roller-ski track are therefore two different options at the Nordic Centre, while the pond offers water activities and a place to sunbathe.

The Kohlstatt Loop is an approximately 19 km circular route for a cycling tour. It leads to the hamlet of Kohlstatt, passes the Greiner inn and heads towards Austria. In the 16th century, the Ungarsteig was a cattle-driving route along which hundreds of Hungarian oxen were driven every year to Regensburg and Nuremberg and on to the Rhine.

In Rastbüchl, the Baptist Kitzlinger ski jump has served as a training and competition venue for ski jumping since it opened in 1967. It adds a sporting use, documented since 1967, to today’s opportunities for physical activity.
