Franconian Wine Country: Wine, Water and World Heritage
Accommodation in Franconian Wine Country
Along the Main, Franconian Wine Country has designated canoe and kayak launch and landing points. There are also wine routes, seasonal events and cultural venues with a range of focuses. You can shape your stay around the water, wine culture, cycling excursions or art.
On the Main: finding your way along the waterway
For a canoe trip, the designated launch and landing points along the Main are a practical starting point. Before setting off, check which points suit your plans. This lets you plan your trip around the designated access points to the water.
Along the waterway, “Yellow Wave” signs point to launch and landing points, as well as campsites and rest areas. Restaurants, shopping facilities, sights and train stations are signposted too. The signs thus indicate both practical stops and destinations for different interests. Information about services may change locally.
Wine country between routes and vintners’ estates
More than 30 routes in Franconian Wine Country bear the “Paths to Wine” quality seal. On the certified routes, signage is reliable and consistent; most are designed as circular tours. Nevertheless, check local signs when planning. Suggested cycling tours range from three-hour excursions to trips lasting several days. This range can help you distinguish a shorter bike ride from a multi-day outing.
The route through Franconian Wine Country between Schweinfurt and Karlstadt takes you past wine estates and wine bars. Heckenwirtschaften—seasonal wine taverns—are also part of the region’s wine culture: vintners open their estates for them at certain times of the year. Dates vary from year to year, so check the latest dates if you plan to visit one.
Silvaner is the signature grape variety of Franconian Wine Country. The Bocksbeutel has been a hallmark of Franconian wine for centuries and is now protected under EU law. Another wine-country view can be enjoyed from the viewing platform at “terroir f” on the Stettener Stein: in 2020, the German Wine Institute named it “Franconia’s most beautiful wine view.”
The annual calendar of events includes wine festivals, wine tastings and Christmas markets. Dates and individual programmes vary from year to year. So if you’re planning your trip around a particular festival or market, check the relevant dates.
Art, World Heritage and cultural venues
Würzburg Residence is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The climb to Marienberg Fortress offers views over Würzburg; the fortress is also home to the Museum für Franken, which houses the largest collection of Tilman Riemenschneider’s masterpieces. If you plan to make the climb, check the latest visitor information beforehand.
Other cultural venues each offer their own focus: the Church of Maria im Weingarten in Volkach displays Tilman Riemenschneider’s Madonna in the Rosary. The German Carnival Museum in Kitzingen is the official museum of the German Carnival Association. Its themes range from religious art to carnival.
In Schweinfurt, you can compare different artistic focuses. Kunsthalle Schweinfurt presents contemporary art from 1945 onwards, while the Georg Schäfer Museum houses the most important private collection of 19th-century German painting. This lets you plan your cultural visit around art form and period, rather than treating the two museums as interchangeable stops.
When looking for a hotel in Franconian Wine Country, you can first decide what brings you there: an event, a cycling excursion of a suitable duration, or a particular art and culture focus.
