The Regensburg destination brings together Neoclassical memorial architecture on the Danube, medieval castle culture, a garden park with Nepalese influences and a range of activities. For your hotel stay, you can organize your outings according to your interests: should culture take center stage, or garden art, or a sporting activity by bike, on foot or on the water?

Walhalla and Wolfsegg Castle

Walhalla in Donaustauf is a Neoclassical memorial and hall of honor on the Danube. Since 1842, notable Germans and people associated with German history have been honored there with marble busts and commemorative plaques. Its Doric exterior features 52 columns. The building thus combines a striking architectural style with its memorial function.

From Easter to October, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé travel along the Danube from Regensburg’s Stone Bridge to the foot of Walhalla. Check the specific operating days before your trip. From the bus stop, an approximately 20-minute walk via 358 steps also leads to Walhalla. Take this route into account when planning your time, and check current path conditions before your visit.

Wolfsegg Castle also offers its own glimpse into history: it is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in the region. Its rooms house a castle museum that was completely redesigned in 2019. It aims to bring life in a medieval castle to life in an authentic setting.

Garden art and plant diversity in Wiesent

The nine-hectare Nepal-Himalaya Park in Wiesent combines Asian culture and nature. Its features include a Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous Asian works of art. The park also includes a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species. Garden spaces, plant diversity and works of art offer a variety of perspectives throughout the park.

The Nepal-Himalaya Pavilion can also be reached from Wiesent via a 2.8-kilometer hike. If you plan to take this route, be sure to factor the stated distance into your day’s schedule.

Cycling and hiking trails, climbing and water sports

The signposted Fruit Experience Trail is a cycling route of approximately 34 kilometers from Hemau via Beratzhausen to KallmĂĽnz. Twelve large information boards are located along the route. Since 2007, KallmĂĽnz Castle Ruin has been linked, as part of the Regensburg Castle Trails, with 44 other castles and castle ruins nearby. The network comprises five hiking routes totaling 200 kilometers. When planning, the distinction between a single cycling route and a hiking network makes the different types of activity clear.

The Regensburg Climbing Forest in Riegling near Sinzing has 14 courses and 135 climbing elements of varying difficulty. At Lake Guggenberger See near Neutraubling, divers, windsurfers and small-boat sailors can practice their sport in a designated area. If you prefer a guided outing, Dream Alpakas offers guided alpaca hikes, also known as alpaca trekking, starting from the alpaca farm in Altenthann. Check availability before booking.

Baierwein and a trail on the Danube

The wine education trail belonging to the Baierwein Museum in Bach an der Donau is accessible at all times. It provides information about the past and present of Baierwein and introduces the local grape variety, White Elbling. The trail adds an excursion destination focused on a topic connected both with history and with the region’s wine tradition.

When planning your hotel stay, it may help to prioritize the experiences you’re looking for first: Walhalla and Wolfsegg Castle represent memorial and castle culture, the park in Wiesent offers garden art, while the cycling route, hiking network, climbing forest and lake provide different types of activities. This way, you can organize your outing preferences before choosing accommodation to suit your personal needs.
