Tegernheim: Trails, Church History and Winemaking Tradition
Accommodation in Tegernheim
Hiking and Geological History
The OR3 Pfarrwörth circular hiking trail in Tegernheim begins and ends at the bicycle station on the embankment on Donaustraße in Tegernheim. The route is 6.5 kilometres long. This gives you a specific starting and ending point, as well as the total route length—two details you can use to plan your hike.
The trail follows the shore of the Almgrube, a former gravel pit reclaimed by nature. The OR3 trail also leads to a birdwatching station. The changing landscape and birdwatching add different points of interest to the route.
The Tegernheimer Schlucht Geopath focuses on something different: its seven stations offer insights into geological history. Three stations for young explorers include an insect hotel, a rest area with climbing activities, and a wooden path for clever minds. Geological information is presented alongside features specially designed for young explorers.
Guided tours of the Geopath are usually held from May to November on the second Sunday of each month at 2:30 p.m. Check dates and make arrangements before travelling.
The different focus of each route can help you choose: Pfarrwörth is a 6.5-kilometre loop with a focus on the landscape and birdwatching, while the Geopath centres on geological history and its seven stations.
Parish Church and Local History
The Parish Church of the Annunciation in Tegernheim brings together several art-historical details. The tympanum of its High Gothic portal depicts Christ as Salvator, flanked by Alpha and Omega. His right hand, raised in blessing, is broken off. The coat of arms of the municipality of Tegernheim depicts the Romanesque fortified tower of the parish church.
The church houses numerous Late Gothic sculptures: Saint Urban, a Madonna, a Crucifixion group, a Rosary Madonna, and the twelve apostles on the high altar. The old door leaf of the portal is also noteworthy: it probably dates from the 16th century and is covered entirely with iron on the outside.
For four decades, people have gathered in the Marian Chapel on Tegelweg in Tegernheim to pray and make silent requests before the image of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa.
Market, Wine and Summer Activities
The farmers’ market in Tegernheim is held every Saturday on Szczytnaer Weg, north of the Netto supermarket. Seasonal opening hours may change, so check the current times before your visit.
Wine has been grown on the slopes descending towards the Danube since Roman times, thanks to favourable soil and climatic conditions. This winemaking tradition connects the landscape of the slopes with Tegernheim’s local history.
A seasonal attraction is the Beerenmeile (Berry Mile) at Hohen Sand: in summer, visitors can buy or pick various kinds of berries there.
Getting There by Bus
The accessible “Tegernheim Martin-Luther-Kirche” stop is served by RVV routes 5, 36/37 and 63. Check current connections before travelling, as transit services may change.
