Barbing offers several options for a stay: leisure activities at Sarchinger See, local trails, and architectural and landscape history. If you are looking for a hotel in Barbing, you can start by deciding what you would most like to focus on. The wider destination of Regensburg offers additional cultural and nature-related attractions.

Leisure in the municipality and by the water

Sarchinger See is located in the Danube plain between Sarching and Friesheim. Activities there include swimming, beach volleyball, playing football on a playing field, and rowing. The lake therefore offers different options for leisure planning, from water activities to ball games.

A few local cycling and hiking trails run through the municipality of Barbing. These include “Rund um Barbing” and “Ins-Drei-Seen-Land.” If you are considering a tour, it is advisable to check the current route.

Rinsen: Natural monument by a former branch of the Danube

The Rinsen Natural Monument is located near Barbing, by a former branch of the Danube. It is part of the “Donauaue und Auwälder südöstlich von Regensburg” landscape conservation area. Since 2009, the Rinsen footbridge has provided careful access to the water and views of the natural monument. If the footbridge is important to your visit, check in advance whether it is currently accessible.

Church architecture and Barbinger Wiese

The parish church of St. Martin combines a Baroque replacement building with the surviving east choir of its Gothic predecessor. Two construction phases therefore come together in one church: the older choir was retained when the later building was constructed.

The Kreuzhof Chapel in Barbing stands on the site regarded as the location of the historical event on Barbinger Wiese. It is unclear whether the chapel was already there at the time.

In the wider destination of Regensburg

Walhalla adds a distinct architectural and historical dimension. Since 1842, this Neoclassical memorial and hall of fame on the Danube has honored eminent Germans and people associated with German history with marble busts and commemorative plaques. Its exterior is Doric in style and includes 52 columns. From Easter to October, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé run from the Stone Bridge in Regensburg to the foot of Walhalla. From the bus stop, the walk to Walhalla takes about 20 minutes and includes 358 steps. Check the boats’ specific operating days before your trip.

The Nepal-Himalaya Park in Wiesent offers a different focus. Across nine hectares, it combines Asian culture and nature, with a Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous works of Asian art. The park includes a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species. Unlike Neoclassical Walhalla, the focus here is on garden design and plant diversity.

The Baierwein Museum in Bach an der Donau features a wine trail that is accessible at any time. It provides information about the past and present of Baierwein and introduces the local grape variety, White Elbling. The subject of wine thus adds another regional perspective to the architectural and garden art on offer.
