Ebersberg: Forest, Culture and Regional Traditions
Accommodation in Ebersberg
Climb the 169 steps of the observation tower in the Ebersberg Forest and you can see across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. On especially clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high come into view. The views, environmental education and exhibitions offer different focal points for planning your trip and each reveal nature and culture in their own way.
Forest, Views and Environmental Education
The Museum of Forest and Environment has stood right beside the Ebersberg Forest since 2004. It explores the history of forest use and forest ecology. This brings the history of human use and the ecological perspective together right beside the forest. The subject of the forest can thus be viewed differently from the observation tower: from there, the view stretches across the Alpine foothills, while the museum focuses on forest use and ecology.
The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre is also dedicated to education for sustainable development and has received the Bavarian “Umweltbildung.Bayern” quality seal. Most of its events take place outdoors and in the adjoining forest. Visits with school classes and other groups are possible. The event format and group option complement the museum’s subject matter with a distinct approach to environmental education. If you are interested in forests and nature, you can take these different focal points into account when planning your trip.
Museums, Buildings and Local History
The Grafing City Museum offers special and permanent exhibitions that provide insights into artistic highlights from the surrounding area, as well as the lives and work of people in the region around Grafing. Art and everyday history are presented side by side. The Grafing City Museum lists its opening hours as Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m.; it is closed on public holidays. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Elkofen Castle is located in Unterelkofen, two kilometres south of Grafing town centre. The castle is one of the best-preserved in Upper Bavaria and is surrounded by a wide, deep moat that was once filled with water. The historic moat and the site’s location south of the town centre give the building its distinctive character. This makes it different from the exhibitions in Grafing, which explore art history and the lives of people in the region.
Poing also has a specific connection to Roman history: a branch of the Roman road led there to Roman farmsteads, which were discovered during construction work in 2004. While the museum in Grafing offers insights into art and regional ways of life, Poing points to a road branch and the discovery of the farmsteads.
Annual Traditions and Harvest Thanksgiving
The Perchtenlauf is a firmly established part of the pre-Christmas season in the market town of Kirchseeon and takes place every year. Elaborately designed masks, ornate costumes, drums and bells create its distinctive atmosphere. If the Perchtenlauf is a key part of your trip, check the date for the year in question.
The former Herrmannsdorf estate lies east of Glonn and is a model project for organic farming known beyond the region. Herrmannsdorfer hosts a large farm festival for Harvest Thanksgiving once a year. It features local specialities cooked over an open fire, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, freshly made Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer. The barns and workshops also open their doors. The annual festival thus brings together food and opportunities to explore the barns and workshops; plan your trip around the date for that year.
For Hohenlinden, the nearby Ebersberg Forest offers another natural attraction. It has marked hiking trails, an accessible forest nature trail and a wildlife enclosure. The options range from hiking and exploring a forest nature trail to watching wildlife in the enclosure, complementing the forest’s views and environmental education with other specific interests.
