Pliening: Local History and Recreation
Accommodation in Pliening
If you are looking for a hotel in Pliening, specific local interests can help you get a sense of the destination. Local points of interest include an archaeologically documented church site, sports facilities at the sports grounds and— in Gelting, within the municipality—an exhibition space run by the local history association. The topics therefore range from early church history and sports to the association’s activities and exhibitions.
Pliening: History and Recreation
At the site of today’s Kreuzkirche, the existence of a first church building in 1000 AD is archaeologically documented. This date refers to the first church at the site, not to the present church building. This places an early ecclesiastical connection firmly in the history of the area.
A skate park at the sports grounds in Pliening was officially opened. The streetball court is located right next to the park’s obstacle. This clearly places two different sports facilities close together. If you are more interested in sports than history when choosing a destination, this is a distinct local highlight.
Since August 2025, the Pliening Local History Association (Heimatverein Pliening e. V.) has had access to exhibition space in the museum room of the Old School in Gelting. The more recent date contrasts with the church evidence from the year 1000: in Gelting, the focus is on exhibition space made available to the association.
In the wider Ebersberg destination
Climbing the observation tower in Ebersberg Forest means ascending 169 steps to enjoy views across the entire Alpine foothills—from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. On exceptionally clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high are even visible. Views of these distant peaks are explicitly dependent on exceptionally clear conditions.
The Museum of Forest and Environment has stood right next to Ebersberg Forest since 2004. It focuses on the history of forest use and forest ecology. The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre has been awarded the Bavarian quality seal “Umweltbildung.Bayern” and offers events on education for sustainable development. These take place mainly outdoors and in the adjacent forest; visits with school classes or other groups are possible. Unlike the museum, which focuses on forest history and ecology, the Environmental Education Centre’s events focus on education.
Cultural events also add a seasonal highlight: the Kirchseeon Perchtenlauf is a fixture of the pre-Christmas season and delights numerous visitors every year. Elaborate masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells shape the atmosphere in the market town of Kirchseeon. If you plan to attend, check the dates in advance.
A branch of the Roman road led to Roman estates in Poing, discovered during construction work in 2004. Special and permanent exhibitions at the Museum of the City of Grafing offer insights into artistic and historical highlights of the surrounding area, as well as the lives and work of people around Grafing. The museum is open Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm and Sundays from 2 to 4 pm; it is closed on public holidays. Check the opening hours before your visit. Elkofen Castle is in Unterelkofen, two kilometres south of Grafing town centre, and is one of Upper Bavaria’s best-preserved castles. A wide, deep moat surrounds the castle; in the past, it was filled with water.
