Steinhöring: Golf, Maximiliansee and Pilgrimage History
Accommodation in Steinhöring
Three themes can guide your travel planning in Steinhöring: golf, the Maximiliansee bathing lake and the pilgrimage history of the St. Christophorus curate church. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the golf courses, time by the water or the church heritage. The details give each of these themes its own character.
Golf courses with different features
There are two golf courses in the municipality of Steinhöring. The Ebersberg Golf Club (Golf-Club Ebersberg e.V.) in Zaißing has an 18-hole championship course and the 9-hole Sepp-Maier course. The two course layouts differ in their number of holes. The Thailing golf course in the Ebersberg Forest offers Alpine views during a round of golf; it also features a sun terrace with panoramic views. Different aspects therefore take centre stage: in Zaißing, the course layouts provide a concrete point of reference, while in Thailing, the views during a round and from the terrace are the main attraction. If you are planning a visit to a course, check the operator’s latest information beforehand.
Maximiliansee and facilities by the sports field
Maximiliansee is in the northeastern part of the municipality. The artificial lake, fed by groundwater, is a bathing lake, with sunbathing lawns directly beside it. Sanitary facilities and a place to buy refreshments are located by the sports field. If you are planning a day of swimming, please check current local information about the facilities beforehand.
500 years of pilgrimage history at St. Christophorus
The interior and furnishings of the St. Christophorus curate church tell the story of 500 years of pilgrimage history. Legend panels on the south wall recount the life of Saint Christopher. They were created in 1677 for the pilgrimage site. The two dates refer to different aspects: 500 years represents the history of the pilgrimage, while 1677 is the year the panels were made. The church thus brings together a broadly defined religious heritage and a furnishing detail with a specific date. If you would like to see the furnishings in person, please enquire about current visiting arrangements beforehand.
More to explore in the wider Ebersberg destination
In the wider Ebersberg destination, the observation tower in the Ebersberg Forest offers far-reaching views across the Alpine foothills. Climb its 169 steps and you can see from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu; on exceptionally clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high are also visible. The Forest and Environment Museum offers an insight into the woods: it has stood right beside the Ebersberg Forest since 2004 and explores the history of forest use and forest ecology.
The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre is an institution for events on education for sustainable development, recognised with the Bavarian quality seal Umweltbildung.Bayern. These events mostly take place outdoors and in the adjacent forest; visits with school classes or other groups are possible. Culture also shapes the run-up to Christmas in the wider Ebersberg destination: the Kirchseeon Perchtenlauf is an annual fixture at this time of year. In the market town of Kirchseeon, impressive masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells set the atmosphere.
Once a year, Herrmannsdorfer hosts a large harvest thanksgiving festival in the wider Ebersberg destination. The programme includes regional delicacies from the fire pit, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, freshly made Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer. The farm buildings and workshops also open their doors. This annual festival provides a seasonal focus alongside golf, the bathing lake and pilgrimage history.
