Forstinning offers two distinct points of interest: the Parish Church of the Visitation of Mary, with its Baroque-style appearance, and the Sempt-Mangfall Cycle Route, which passes through the town on its way into the Ebersberg Forest. The artworks provide a cultural connection, while the route offers a link to cycling. In Ebersberg, the wider travel destination, visitors can also enjoy views, learn about the forest and attend seasonal events.

Church art in Forstinning

The Parish Church of the Visitation of Mary in Forstinning was given a Baroque makeover in 1765/66 by Munich master builder Baltasar Trischberger, and acquired its present appearance at that time. A late Gothic sculpture of the Lamentation of Christ stands on the altar table. The well-preserved ceiling frescoes date from the same period in which the church acquired its present appearance. They depict the Visitation of Mary and the veneration of Mary by Pope Sylvester. A late Gothic work of art and frescoes from the Baroque makeover period thus stand side by side as distinct art forms. For culturally minded travelers, this contrast offers a concrete point of reference: the sculpture can be dated to a different period than the frescoes, whose subjects also offer insight into the veneration of Mary.

The Sempt-Mangfall Cycle Route

The Sempt-Mangfall Cycle Route passes through Forstinning on its way into the Ebersberg Forest. Alongside its parish church, Forstinning therefore has a second clear point of interest: a cycling route with a named course leading toward the forest. This gives travelers two distinct interests to consider when planning their trip: cultural history and cycling. The parish church is characterized by its decorative details, while the cycle route is defined by its course through Forstinning into the Ebersberg Forest.

Forest and views in Ebersberg

In the wider travel destination of Ebersberg stands the observation tower in the Ebersberg Forest. Climbing its 169 steps rewards visitors with views across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. On particularly clear days, even distant peaks over 3,000 meters high can be seen. The tower offers panoramic views, while the Forest and Environment Museum focuses on something different. It has stood right beside the Ebersberg Forest since 2004 and is dedicated to the history of forest use and forest ecology.

The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Center is also devoted to these forest-related topics. It is an institution recognized with Bavaria’s “Umweltbildung.Bayern” quality seal for events promoting education for sustainable development. Events take place mostly outdoors and in the adjoining forest; visits by school classes and other groups are possible. Views, forest history and environmental education offer different ways to explore the subject of forests in the Ebersberg travel destination.

Seasonal events

The Kirchseeon Perchten Run is a regular fixture in the run-up to Christmas in the wider Ebersberg travel destination and attracts many visitors every year. Strikingly designed masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells shape the atmosphere in the market town of Kirchseeon. Another recurring event is the farm festival at Herrmannsdorfer, held once a year at harvest thanksgiving. It features delicacies from the fire pit, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, fresh Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer; the stables and workshops also open their doors. These events bring different seasonal highlights: a pre-Christmas mask tradition and a farm festival centered on harvest thanksgiving. If one of them is a key part of your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.
