Markt Schwaben brings together several highlights for your stay: historic buildings, local history at the local history museum and signposted trails. The historic town centre invites you to stroll; the hiking route and cycle path differ in activity and location. For planning your visit, the local history museum’s specific opening times and the lengths of the hiking trail options are also useful.

Culture and Local History

The historic town centre of Markt Schwaben, with its notable churches and buildings, invites you to stroll and linger. The present-day parish church of St. Margaret is part of the town’s architectural history. Based on the building plans of Schwaben master painter Podtmeier, Schliersee master mason Zwerger built the church between 1669 and 1672. These construction years make the period when the church was built tangible.

Local History Museum: Historical Period and Opening Hours

The Markt Schwaben Local History Museum presents the town’s history in 14 rooms, from prehistory and early history through to the year 2000. Unlike the parish church’s construction history, dated to 1669–1672, the local history on display thus spans many eras. The museum is open on the first Sunday of every month from 14:00 to 17:00 and on the third Monday of every month from 18:00 to 20:00. Check the latest visitor information before travelling.

Hiking and Cycling

The permanent hiking trail “Across the Schwabener Moos” is signposted in Markt Schwaben in 5 km and 11 km options. The routes differ first and foremost in length; choose the option that suits the distance you want to cover on your hike. The Sempt-Mangfall cycle route is separate: it passes east of Markt Schwaben and through the Ebersberg Forest, not through the town.

More to Explore in the Wider Ebersberg Destination

The wider Ebersberg destination offers other distinct cultural and nature experiences. The observation tower in the Ebersberg Forest has 169 steps leading to a view across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu; on exceptionally clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high can be seen. The Forest and Environment Museum has stood right by the Ebersberg Forest since 2004 and focuses on the history of forest use and forest ecology. The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre holds the Bavarian “Umweltbildung.Bayern” quality seal and hosts events on education for sustainable development. These take place mainly outdoors and in the adjacent forest; visits by school classes and other groups are possible.

The Kirchseeon Perchten run is a fixture of the run-up to Christmas and takes place every year in the market town of Kirchseeon. Masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells define its atmosphere. Herrmannsdorfer hosts a large farm festival for the harvest thanksgiving once a year. The food includes specialities cooked over an open fire, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, fresh Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer; the stables and workshops also open their doors.
