Kitzingen: City History and the Main
Accommodation in Kitzingen
Kitzingen combines historic buildings with activities on the Main. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you want to focus mainly on the city’s history, exhibitions, a seasonal swimming opportunity, or time on the water. The following topics offer different points of interest; check the dates of individual tours and activities before you travel.
Historic Buildings and City History
The Falterturm was built between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower in the outer city wall; it was formerly known as the “Falltorturm.” The Old Main Bridge, also called the “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in official records in 1300. The town hall, an important historic building from the 16th century, is located on the market square. Hans Eckart von Schaffhausen built it in the Renaissance style. The Market Tower is 39 meters high, was originally part of the inner city wall, and served as a watchtower and prison. Together, these buildings showcase different facets of the city’s history: fortifications and watchkeeping alongside Renaissance architecture and the medieval bridge over the Main.
Tours and Exhibitions
The public city tour takes you through the historic center and across the market square, offering insights into the city’s history. If you want to learn about the historic sites in context, the tour provides a helpful thread to follow during your stay. Check the tour dates before your trip.
The German Carnival Museum features numerous hands-on stations and spacious exhibition rooms. Visitors can explore Fasching, Fastnacht, and Carnival in a playful way. The Deusterturm offers a different focus, housing an ornithological exhibition. Kitzingen thus offers various ways to explore culture and knowledge, from hands-on activities about Fastnacht to ornithology.
Swimming and Getting Out on the Main
The Kitzingen outdoor swimming pool on Mondsee Island is open for family outings from May to September. Facilities include a 50-meter swimming pool, an 80-meter water slide, and a diving tower. Its seasonal opening period is an important difference from the activities on the Main. Near Kitzingen, the river is marked for boat hikers with the “Yellow Wave” signs and invites visitors to explore by boat. Canoes, Canadian canoes, and kayaks are available to rent in Kitzingen. If you are planning a paddling trip, check with providers before you travel. This gives you two different options for your itinerary: a visit to the outdoor pool and exploratory trips on the water.
Tastings and the Regional Setting
The Kitzingen tasting tour combines samples from local restaurants with an exclusive guided tour of the Deuster cellars by flashlight. The food samples and special tour form a single experience. If you are planning to join, check the dates in advance.
The broader travel region of Kitzinger Land lies along the foothills of the Steigerwald. The Main winds through the landscape, and vineyards stretch alongside it. Viticulture, a long tradition of gardening, and a mild climate characterize the region, which is known as the “wine district.” Regional hiking options include 15 TraumRunden trails. They follow natural paths and roads with little asphalt and lead to viewpoints as well as cultural and scenic attractions. These routes bring the landscape together with cultural themes without limiting the trails to just one type of destination.
The regional wine scene also offers a variety of experiences, including wineries, wine bars, hedge taverns, and wine-related activities. One specific example of the connection between landscape and wine culture is TERROIR F Großlangheim. Above the Kiliansberg vineyard site at Hardthütte, there is a viewing platform shaped like a reclining Bocksbeutel wine bottle. This regional offering complements Kitzingen’s historic buildings and activities on the Main with vineyards and viewpoints in Kitzinger Land.
