Accommodation in Dettelbach
When looking for a hotel in Dettelbach, you can plan your visit around several aspects of the town: historic architecture, pilgrimage and art, or themed trails and cycle tours. The historic centre is home to the parish church, market square and town hall. The themes range from the town fortifications and churches to the Marian pilgrimage, literature, landscape and winegrowing.
Townscape and architectural history
According to the town’s 2024 statement, Dettelbach’s late-medieval town wall is just over 1,400 metres long. Of the approximately 52 towers that once stood there, 38 were visible at the time; a few more could only be made out. These varying states of preservation shape the appearance of the historic fortifications.
With its two unequal towers, the parish church of St Augustine is a landmark of Dettelbach. Its Gothic interior and the altarpiece by artist Michael Triegel are special attractions; the altar is the spiritual centre. The late-Gothic town hall, with its double flight of steps, is considered one of the most beautiful and is the oldest in the district of Kitzingen.
Pilgrimage and art
The “Maria in arena” pilgrimage church was built in 1573 and consecrated on 8 September 1613. Its origins are connected with the revival of the Dettelbach pilgrimage during the Renaissance. The “Pilger & Wallfahrer” art museum in KUK Dettelbach is located right next to the historic town hall. It features original artworks and objects, and focuses on the Diocese of Würzburg’s most important Marian pilgrimage, which is still alive today. This pilgrimage has shaped life in Dettelbach for over 500 years.
Trails, culture and activity
The Legends and Myths Trail runs for around two kilometres through vineyards and the Dettelbach countryside. Twelve panels share myths about Dettelbach, as well as information about the geology of the Main River, the development of agriculture and winegrowing in the region. At around two kilometres, it is shorter than the 11-kilometre “TraumRunde” Dettelbach circular hike; the Herz-Jesu-Höhe is a highlight of this route.
The Joseph-Kram Poets’ Trail has a literary focus: 15 stops featuring Franconian poems describe the living conditions, ways of thinking and emotions of the rural population in the 19th century. It complements the “Pilgervolk” and “Panta Rhei” cultural and art trails. Cycle tours on the Main Cycle Route are also possible from Dettelbach. The two themed trails also differ in how they present their material: the Myths Trail uses twelve panels, while the Poets’ Trail has 15 poetry stops.
Local speciality and getting there
Muskatzinen are spicy pastries found only in Dettelbach. They were created especially for pilgrims and are often served with wine.
