Willanzheim: Fortified Church, Hiking Trails and Wine
Accommodation in Willanzheim
Willanzheim offers several different ways to explore culture and landscape: the village culture trail with information boards, hiking trails on the Tannenberg and an orchard experience trail in Markt Herrnsheim. These are complemented by the fortified church complex at the heart of the village, as well as wine tastings and vineyard tours in HĂĽttenheim. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip, depending on your interests: would you like to explore a circular trail focused on village culture, a path through orchards, or a wine-related activity?
Hiking trails by length and theme
The Willanzheim Village Culture Trail is a five-kilometre circular route with eight information boards. Guided tours are available for groups and school classes. Its circular route and information boards give it a different character from the H1 “Historic Trails around the Tannenberg”: this trail is around 5.4 kilometres long, bears the “Trails to Wine” quality seal and starts at the Hüttenheim hiking car park. Information boards along the H1 explain details of the cultural landscape. At approximately this length, the H1 is slightly longer than the Village Culture Trail; the routes also differ in their names and in the information provided along the way.
In the village of Markt Herrnsheim, the Orchard Experience Trail leads through the orchards around the village. It is about two kilometres long and easy to walk. It brings the subject of orchards to life for children, school classes, families and other interested visitors. Compared with the longer hiking trails, this route is shorter and focuses on orchards. You can choose between a circular route with eight information boards, the H1 on the Tannenberg, and a short trail through orchards.
Fortified churches, wine and a Kneipp pool
The fortified church complex defines the heart of Willanzheim. St. Martin’s Church became the seat of an ancient parish and is the mother church of Tiefenstockheim and Obernbreit. As well as its hiking trails, Willanzheim therefore has a clear focus on church history. Nearby, the fortified church complex in Hüttenheim is one of the best-preserved fortified church-and-dwelling complexes in Franconia.
In HĂĽttenheim, winegrowers offer wine tastings and vineyard tours. The HĂĽttenheim hiking trails also pass within just a few metres of the Kneipp pool at the Neuwiesenbach spring. The pool lies southeast of HĂĽttenheim at the foot of the Tannenberg and offers a refreshing break. If you would like to include this stop in your hike, check the local conditions at the pool before your visit.
There is also a themed route for cyclists: the “Fortified Churches Tour” passes through Willanzheim, Markt Herrnsheim and Hüttenheim. It offers a different way to include these three named places in your travel plans than the individual hiking trails. On foot, you can choose between routes of different lengths and themes such as village culture and orchards; by bike, the Fortified Churches Tour brings these places together under a shared theme.
Historic buildings in the wider Kitzingen destination
The wider Kitzingen destination offers other historic landmarks. The Falterturm in Kitzingen, formerly called the “Falltorturm,” was built from 1469 to 1496 as a watchtower in the outer city wall. The Old Main Bridge, also known as “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. Kitzingen’s market square is also home to the 16th-century town hall, built by Hans Eckart von Schaffhausen in the Renaissance style. These buildings in Kitzingen differ in function and historical period: the bridge, watchtower and Renaissance town hall add to the historic context but are not among Willanzheim’s sights.
