The fortified church in Ostheim vor der Rhön was declared a monument of national importance in 2003. It is Germany’s largest and one of its best-preserved fortified churches. At the Fortified Church Museum in Ostheim, you can learn about a dozen more fortified churches in the region, including those in Nordheim, Oberstreu and Kaltensundheim. A visit thus leads from the building itself to further examples of this distinctive architecture.

Moor, biosphere and hiking trails

Rhön-Grabfeld is located in the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone within it. A wooden boardwalk takes visitors through parts of the moor, information panels explain the route, and an observation tower offers impressive views of the Black Moor. The various viewpoints and the boardwalk provide different perspectives on the moor.

At Gangolfsberg, the natural forest reserve is part of the core zone of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A striking geological feature is the basalt column wall: it formed between 30 and 10 million years ago during volcanic activity in the Rhön and can be explored along the Gangolfsberg nature trail. The trail is about 2.5 kilometres long; sturdy footwear is required. Guided group tours of the nature trail are available on request. Another hiking option is the premium hiking trail “DER HOCHRHÖNER,” which offers hiking opportunities in Rhön-Grabfeld district.

History to see and experience

The Franconian Open-Air Museum in Fladungen brings 350 years of rural everyday life in Lower Franconia and the Rhön to life through faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads. The 12-hectare museum grounds feature around 30 historic buildings, including farmhouses, craft workshops and a village school. Hands-on activities explore traditional crafts and customs and include demonstrations, practical courses and events. The Rhön-Zügle museum railway travels through the Streu Valley with steam and diesel locomotives, offering another view of the region.

The Kreuzberg also combines natural surroundings with cultural history. At 928 metres, it is the highest mountain in Rhön-Grabfeld district. It has been home to a Franciscan monastery with its own brewery since 1644. Kreuzberg Monastery and its pilgrimage church are a spiritual centre in Lower Franconia.

At the Old Hospital in Mellrichstadt, the district gallery displays the Rhön-Grabfeld district collection: paintings and sculptures from the Baroque period to the present, all with a regional connection. The Hainberg Barracks Documentation Centre at Doku-Z Mellrichstadt focuses on a Cold War border garrison. These two stops offer different ways to explore regional history and art.

The Wechterswinkel bus stop is just a short walk from the monastery. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your visit.

The Old Hospital in Mellrichstadt also has a museum café serving homemade cakes. In the warmer months, you can enjoy them in the museum garden as well. As café services may change, check before your visit whether the offering is currently available.
