Bischofsheim in the Rhön lies at the foot of the Kreuzberg, known as the “Holy Mountain of the Franks.” Rising above the town, the Kreuzberg is a pilgrimage site with a centuries-old tradition and, at 928 metres, the highest mountain in the Rhön-Grabfeld district. When looking for a hotel, you can consider different priorities: hiking and cycling trails, the historic town centre or regional cultural themes.

Hiking Trails and Routes

Hiking trails and mountain biking routes run through Haselbach, a district of Bischofsheim, for example to the Kreuzberg and Neustädter Haus. One specific hiking option is the Bischofsheim–Osterburg–Kreuzberg route. It climbs steeply, runs through shady areas and takes about two and a half hours. Allow for this time when planning your hike; it is also a good idea to check current route information for individual trails.

The Bischofsheim area has 170 kilometres of designated trails. The trail network includes the premium Hochrhöner hiking trail and nearly 30 certified circular routes. The signposted mountain biking routes around Bischofsheim connect places including the Wasserkuppe and the Kreuzberg. The Bischofsheim an der Rhön Mountain Bike Centre offers route suggestions ranging from easy beginner rides and intermediate trails to challenging routes over the highest peaks of the Rhön.

Another cycling option is the Brendtal cycle path, which runs from Bischofsheim to Bad Neustadt. The Flowtrail also runs along the Kreuzberg: it is about two kilometres long and features around 50 performance elements and approximately 180 metres of elevation gain. Check the latest trail information before riding.

Townscape, Crafts and History

The centre of Bischofsheim is laid out as a so-called “Franconian circular village.” In the town centre, the Old Town Walking Tour & Wood Sculpture Trail combines views of picturesque corners with sections along the historic town wall. The late Romanesque Zentturm tower, dating from the 13th century, also shapes the townscape and is a landmark of Bischofsheim. The town’s craft tradition includes Germany’s oldest woodcarving school.

At the Rentamt, a multimedia exhibition displays hundreds of archaeological finds that illustrate life in and around Osterburg. Near Bischofsheim, Osterburg is a castle ruin in a panoramic setting at an elevation of 700 metres, in the heart of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The cultural attractions thus bring together local history, crafts and archaeological insights.

Another long-standing link to the Kreuzberg is the monastery beer, brewed locally since 1731. This brewing tradition adds another historical aspect to the mountain’s centuries-old pilgrimage history.

More Places to Explore in Rhön-Grabfeld

The wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination offers additional landscape and cultural attractions. The Gangolfsberg nature trail is about 2.5 kilometres long; sturdy footwear is required. You can also explore the basalt column wall there. It formed 30 to 10 million years ago during volcanic activity in the Rhön. The Gangolfsberg nature reserve is part of the core zone of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Guided tours of the nature trail for groups are available on request.

The Franconian Open-Air Museum in Fladungen uses faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads to present 350 years of everyday rural history in Lower Franconia and the Rhön. The approximately 12-hectare museum grounds contain around 30 historic buildings, including farms, craft workshops and a village school. Activities focusing on crafts and traditions include demonstrations, practical courses and events. These regional attractions extend the experience beyond the local history of Bischofsheim.
