Sulzfeld offers travelers several points of interest: an adventure trail associated with the swimming lake, a beer garden hiking trail and sights from the town’s Franconian history. If you are looking for a hotel in Sulzfeld, these different highlights can be taken into account when planning your trip. The two hiking trails differ in route and purpose: one starts in the village square and passes the lake on the way back, while the other connects inns on a circular route. When it comes to sights, it is also important to distinguish between Sulzfeld as a town and Sulzfeld as a municipality with three constituent villages.

Hiking Trails and Swimming Lake

The “Über den Hügeln von Sulzfeld” adventure trail starts in Sulzfeld’s village square. On the way back to Sulzfeld, it passes the Sulzfeld swimming lake. The lake is accessible by car, and parking is available in the town. You can also reach the lake by public bus via the ZOB in Bad Königshofen. Check the timetable for your travel date if you plan to take the bus.

The eight-kilometer Sulzfeld Beer Garden Hiking Trail connects the town’s inns. This well-marked circular trail leads to the next beer garden at varying intervals and eventually returns to the starting point. If you want to choose a route based on distance, the length is specified here; for the adventure trail, the starting point in the village square and the return route past the lake are the key points to note. Participating establishments may change. Before setting out, check which places to stop for refreshments are currently relevant to your plans.

Sights in the Constituent Villages

The municipality of Sulzfeld comprises the constituent villages of Sulzfeld, Kleinbardorf and Leinach. Historical and characteristically Franconian sights there include the Wildburg ruins, the fortified church, the moated castle, the Jewish cemetery and numerous half-timbered houses. Sulzfeld Castle is in the center of the town of the same name in Grabfeld; interior visits are currently not possible.

Kleinbardorf Moated Castle is in another constituent village. After the castle there was badly damaged in the 16th century, Heinrich von Bibra had the old knight’s residence demolished. The following year, the moated castle was built on the same site. It is surrounded by contemporary art and a sculpture garden. The moated castle and sculpture garden are considered viewable from the outside.

Rhön-Grabfeld: A Wider Regional Perspective

The UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve is located in the wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination. The Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps. In the Black Moor, a boardwalk runs through parts of the area; information panels explain the route, and an observation tower offers a view of the moor.

Cultural attractions in Rhön-Grabfeld also extend beyond the sights of Sulzfeld. The Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen features around 30 historic buildings across a 12-hectare museum site, including farmsteads, craft buildings and a village school. Through faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads, it presents 350 years of everyday rural history in Lower Franconia and the Rhön. The Rhön-Zügle museum railway travels through the Streutal valley with steam and diesel locomotives.
